In theory... could a HD (large portable type) be used?

Just seen portable HD's with 50G available cheaply.
Could one be used as it'd fit in the glove box and could be powered from the lighter/charger.

Don't see why not my iPhone is 32gb and it reads that

No reason why not. To the B&M system it would presumably be seen as a generic mass storage device.

One thing to consider, though, is that the prolonged vibrations & bumps in the interior of the car may not be particularly healthy for the hard drive's mechanics in the long term.
