And turns out is a faulty crankshaft sensor.

yes perfect, immo goes off then i crank it but no start
If as you describe then sounds like immobiliser doing what it should.
Have you got access to good diagnostics, as my next thought assuming rev counter is reacting to starter cranking would be to measure diesel pressure at Common Rail, this can only be done with good diagnostics using "live data" and should be approaching 300Bar if it doesn't then the computer will not let engine start.
