The United Nations states that those forced to flee persecution to claim asylum should seek refuge in the first peaceful country they come to. On this basis, generally the internationally recognised one, we should not accept those seeking asylum apart from those fleeing the countries immediately surrounding Britain, such as Holland,Iceland, France, Norway, Germany, Belgium or Ireland. We should only consider citizens of these countries for asylum.

Firstly it's a fact that asylum seekers are a net gain to the country, i.e. the economy benefits from them. There are some who just live off the state but they are a minority, it's just the press pick up on it, they don't write reports on doctors from Iraq, coming here, helping the NHS and contributing more than a lot of people in the UK do.

It is the complicated system we have which needs changing.

Immigrants can not stop in the the first safe place they come to, those countries would be overrun with them. We would not get any. Besides it's under european law that we have to take a certain amount each year, and you will find that it is less than other countries in europe.

In regards to the first post, what has it got to do with him being an asylum seeker? Millions of british drivers speed, don't have insurance, don't have tax and MOTS etc. Again thousands of children have been killed on the roads by negligent british drivers, there are bad people in every country. Maybe if the system had been more efficient the child would have been spared.

The only thing I would agree with is sentencing, I am training to be a barrister and some of the sentences are ridiculously low, especially in the above case.

Most of the people in the UK and those people on this forum (no offence) do not know how lucky they are, we take everything for granted, the people from some of these countries have nothing at all, they aren't considering what modification to their car they should do next, they are wondering how they will survive, whether they are starving or through threat of war, think about how lucky you are before refusing these people, you think your life is hard?. However I do think there are many which should be sent back because of crime, terrorism etc.

I endorse what Gary F has said because I think it's a more reasoned view from a wider perspective. All of us have perfectly natural loyalties and preferences firstly to family/friends, then colleagues/associates (perhaps) then region, country and finally 'others' at the bottom of the pile

These others seem to be viewed by many here as no better than vermin, but they're still people with all the same hopes and worries that you and I have

Some are assylum seekers, some are economic migrants, but they're nearly all desperate. Many sell everything they own and hand over all their money to people smugglers - these are the real vermin who rob and lie to these people and make profit from their desperation and misery

I also agree that the penalty was way too low for the offence. It should be much higher and the SAME for everyone convicted, regardless of the person's origin or status

It's true, Pete, that IF that immigrant hadn't come here and IF he had been ejected imediately the child would still be alive. I have two children and can think of no greater pain than losing one, especially like this, so suddenly and meaninglessly

However if we looked at all the incidents of death or injury by drink driving, speeding and wreckless driving, what percentage of those behind the wheel would be here illegally? A very tiny proportion

Spyder, its YOUR type of response that pisses me off. What the **** was that remark for? If by giving my fears of the situation in an educated post it makes me a racist - then I must be - duh? What I cannot grasp is whether you did not read post or whether you did not understand it?
The comment at Roberto was also taking this **** out of the British attitude during the period - not whether it was right or wrong, or did you just read it on its own? I totally agree with what Roberto brought up.

Even though noe of you have ever met me (Or maybe you have and you just don't know it; I'm glad that there's no more anymosity.

I have to say that the attack was rather personal and anyone had said that to me face to face, they'd be picking themselves up off the floor; irrespective of whether or not the British are the most blood thirsty/racist country, going back in time.

Personally, I dont think we are, but what does my opinion count for?

Very little, really, but I have to say that I think the bloke sounds like a complete tool.

IMO this post has evolved for the wrong and should be halted. We all have our own opinion no matter which side of the arguement we are on, and seeing as not one of us fully know the circumstances of each matter, it would be best to leave alone before we carry on as the old RR was and destroy this forum ourselves. Just a thought to bear in mind.
