To all OLD ulysse drivers (cars that is)

I am still having this problem once in a while :bang: The idle value and throttle have been cleaned and the hose between the oil filler and throttle was cleaned (amazed at how much oil came out!) But what I do now is adjust the throttle cable two notches and that stopped the stalling. After a few minutes you will notice that at stand still or between gears it revs high so re-adjust back two notches then you are back to normal till the next time!!

I will be going to nearest dealers to get some spare spring clips just in case I lose one during adjustment-ahhhhhhh

You have to notice an important thing that is the oil entry into the throttle body...... It means the valve door breather has some problem in letting out the oil into the throttle body....

Or your engine may got decompressed so...... the compression escaped through the cylinder rings is causing this problem......

You again clean the throttle body and let you engine run properly....... In this time you remove the breather hose..... Which may be connected from the valve door to the air cleaner....... then you drive a long distance if you haven’t faced that problem again means then the valve door breather is the source of this complain..... ok bye......

Thanks Samy
Sorry for my ignorance but where's the valve door breather? There are three hoses coming from/going to the top of the oil filler chamber :-

1--- joins onto the large tube/hose between the air filter and the throttle. 2--- joins onto the throttle housing just above stepper motor(idle valve). 3--- heads around the back of engine?

There is a hose at bottom of chamber going to the sump. The chamber itself has been removed and cleaned by myself, and it was hose 2 from above which I cleaned out. This is a very tempermental fault and the last couple of times it has been the day after a 250 mile trip - whilst on holiday!!!

Any help will be appreciated.

CHEERS.

Hope fully from your explanation the 2nd hose you had mentioned is the source of this problem.......

I think this hose will be connected between the valve door and the throttle boady..... You clearly watch for any oil strains in it…..

If so just clean it well and make it get unplugged from the throttle body assembly...... Also put a dummy on the hole where is been connected to the throttle body......

After which you once again clean your throttle body and allow your engine run properly....... I hope this complain wont repeat again ......

If you need any more detail, don’t hesitate to ask me.............

Thanks Samy.
The hose is coated on the inside with oil which is yellowish (moisture due to condensation?) which I have cleaned out before I will do so again and leave it off. I will plug the hose connector on the throttle body as there is a good suction there. Should I plug the hose as well

I take it that it has been sucking up all the oil mist from the filler chamber through the hose and into the idle valve chamber which is then conjealing. This could be causing it not to function properly?

I am using Castrol Magnetec oil 10w 40 could it be that this oil is more prone to oil misting then others?

regards
Donald

Hi Donald,
You had now located the right hose…….. Now you have to do three jobs…… First is put a Dummy to the hole on the throttle body where this hose is been connected……

Second: leave the other end hose open to the atmosphere….. That is the end which is been connected to the valve door (oil filler chamber) must have to be kept open to the atmosphere….

Third: Clean the throttle body well and make your engine to run properly after which I hope you won’t get back the complain…….. It is all due to the oil suction by the throttle body from the valve door…. If your engine is very old mean you can also use 15w 40 oil….. Before using it also check your manual….

If you need any thing more please email me……… and one more thing I have an injection error in my fiat palio 1.9 Diesel which I had put as an question in this web if you can please try to give your suggestion…… It is in the directory of palio…… ok bye………

Thanks again.

I will be doing just that. Whats the point of the hose anyway?

I have just been to my local fiat dealer and they put the car on an examiner and found a fault with a pressure sensor/sending unit which they replaced. the part number is F0046531222 and cost £55.23 + vat with labour at £45 + vat.

I will keep you posted as a lot of folk were having the same problems

regards
donald

hi all been reading with interest all your questions and answers ive had this problem off and on for a year now and i know a lot more ulysse owners with the same problem i will be trying all samy,s fixes .thanks george :)

(n) STARTED DOING IT AGAIN TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (n)

less 24 hours after sensor fitted which I was told was causing the problem!

Phoned straight away and was told bring it in on tuesday. Another 120mile round trip. Worst of all is it means another shopping trip for the wife. :(
I have to leave the throttle cable adjusted by one notch and the revs are only dropping to around 500rpm instead of stalling this will keep us going for now. The Fiat engineer says he has not come across this problem before.

Will let you know outcome but only if I dont have to sell this PC to pay for a new ECU.

funny that my fiat garage said the same thing but i know at least another 4 people that have the same problem .last time mine did it was the day after a 300 mile trip :bang: . i have had about 7 fiats but this makes me :yuck:

Car was back in the Fiat workshop on tuesday it looks like they have taken the idle value out and cleaned it and I don't know what else they did yet. Car was used for the first time yesterday(friday) started ok drove approx 6miles to relations house. Parked for around three hours. Tried to leave and the same idle problem again :bang:I don't think the workshop will be open today but I will try to contact them.

Hi
I have just today did some testing myself as I have a car data cd. I was testing the resistance between the connections on the idle valve and the readings are 51.6 omns and 52.6 omns while the cd says it should be between 52 and 58 omns for each. Is 0.4 omns going to make a difference to the performance of the valve

bye for now

I think I have fixed it!!!!!
:D

Replaced idle valve takes less then two mins. I reset the throttle cable back to original setting, and now idles at 850rpm smooth as you like!
cost me £45 delivered from a guy breaking a Ulysse he also give me another sensor which i think is the knock sensor which is underneath the throttle housing  . I am sure you will be able to pick up one cheaper. The only tool needed was a torx T20 screwdriver.

Heres hoping cured for good!!!!!

Thanks to all who helped

wish you lots of luck i have had the same problem for over a year but on holiday i cleaned the hose from the idle controle and every thing else i could find that was 2 weeks ago i hope to god thats it :bang: .1 thing for sure ulysse owners must be very easy going we all have the same problem and all love our cars.well a sort of love and hate thing. i have more luck with my other 2 cars a 1.6 tempra estate and a 1.9 td estate .1 more thing i think the ulysse shares a lot of parts with the 806 and siyringy[ not sure how they spell it] do they share engines? if so there must be a lot more :yuck: people about.

Up to 2000/2001 they all share the 2L engine Xu10J2C (8 valve) or 2L engine Xu10J4R (16 valve) I dont know about diesel engines. I've been told the shared engine is french! so not Fiat's engineering?. I got the Peter Russek pocket mechanic manual from ebay it seems pretty good and it says on cover for the Synergie, 806, Ulysse and Lancia Z. petrol models up to 2000/2001.

Donald,

Glad to hear you fixed the idle problem and a hell of a lot cheaper than me.

Your now a member of the exclusive Ulysse owners club that don’t have an idling problem. :) (not many of us about) (y)

Darren.

Thanks Darren

but you will prop have a new one while mine was from a scrap car so no telling how long it will last? I am keeping my eye out for more valves just incase!

one problem solved two started!! see new thread.

cheers all.
Donald.

Hi Donald,

I'm having the same idle problem on my '95 Ulysse 2.0S. I have bought a replacement, brand new ICV off eBay (it was listed as a part for an 806 but I'm convinced it's the same thing) and intend to fit it myself. Cost about 25 quid including postage, so quite happy.

Is there anything I need to look out for when changing the unit, or is it a simple case of unclip and unscrew the old one, stick the new one in and screw/clip it in place?

Any dangers/pitfalls I need to be careful of? Do you recommend squirting any cleaners or the like into anyhting?

Thanks for any help! :D

hi, just thought i would add i got a stepper motor off a peugeot or xantia from scrap yard just ever so slightly different for a fiver 2 years ago. solved idle problems and that was two years ago. keep the pipes clean every couple of months.

I've installed the new idle control valve/stepper motor now, and it's like I've got a new engine in the car! It took a few minutes to do with a torx 15 allen key.

Only slight niggle is that it tends to overrun for 5 seconds or so when returning to idle, at about 2500 rpm, before returning to around 850/900.

Anyone got any ideas why that is?
