Idle control valve recon - how?

Hi,

Got a noisy/erratic idle control valve on my 1.8, had a look at the BOO page and it states that dismantling the idle control valve and cleaning it is an option (as is 140 quid to Fiat for a new one, yeah, right...). It also states that some piccies may be forthcoming - anyone got any? I'd like to know what I'm doing prior to ripping it apart!

Cheers

Bump...

Have the same problem - any pictures or better explanations on how to do it?

Mine is a 1.6 from 1996 with way too many miles on the clock and idling between 800-2000 rpm's.

Haynes doesn't have pictures of the 1.6 '96 engine - and doesn't exactly tell you what to take apart and how when it comes to the ICV (as far as i can tell).

There are only 2 screws holding it together on the 1.6 anyway.

two screws on the 1.8..i just undid them and sprayed the whole lot with carb cleaner does the trick for a bout 500 miles then problems bk!

Ok - As far as i know the idle problem could be caused by:

1. The coolant temp. sensor (just above the thermostat).

2. The air temp. sensor (should be the left to the ICV with two wires running to it, right?).

3. Malfunctioning ICV (black "thing" with 4 wires?).

I could probably test the two temp. sensors (does anybody know what resistance they should have at given temps?) I think it might be in the Haynes, but i don't have it at the moment ;-(

If the coolant temp sensor isn't working the temp gauge shouldn't either, right?

Is there anyway to test the ICV? See if it reacts when given it a voltage on some of the pins or something?

1) The idle would stay at a high RPM, it would not jump around

2) Not all of the bravo engines have an IAT sensor, only the 1.6 and 1.4 if memory serves me.

3) Most likely cause.

Most of the engines have 2 coolant sensors, one for the guage and one for the ECU. A diag will show the engine temp.

Do NOT apply volts randomly to the pins on the idle valve motor, you could damage it.

If the revs are jumping around it means it IS working but not properly. Clean it well, don't just spray it with carb cleaner.

see if this helps, dontknow if i uploaded pic right, let me know,if u state the model.cc,yr of car i can maybe get right stuffhttp://www.network54.com/Realm/tmp/1120679882.JPG

"Clean it well, don't just spray it with carb cleaner."

Note the word 'just'. ie it doesn't say 'don't spray it with carb cleaner'.

You actually need to wipe all the gunk out AFTER spraying it with carb cleaner.

"You actually need to wipe all the gunk out AFTER spraying it with carb cleaner."

Ok - how much can it be cleaned without damaging it? The black "cover" can be pulled down, but what's the best way to get the dirt out from inside it?
Will it be damaged if i use compressed air to blow it out? Is it posible to take the ICV more apart (it's just a magnetic valve right?)

Any tips and tricks?

Unbolt it, remove it, clean the plunger that sticks out of it and clean the hole into which it fits.
