right what do u people think about Super Chargers ???
I have been thinking about doin somthing to my car it needs it bad lol
and i really like turbos a lot i know there not as reliable as nitros but i really dont like the idea of having nitros in my car
so i i have been looking around for somthing else this seems to fit the bill
i know i can get a turbo conversion for my car for around £2000 which i think was a 230bhp job i think and then there is also the coupe conversion that i can do but im not so keen on the idea of spending £2500 on a busted coupe then having to have all the work done on that to get it up to scratch and i really dont wont a 2 litre engine i know from driving 1.4 turbos that u dont need to have a big engine to go faster
so any ideas on the super charger front would be great
other wise it looks like im going to go for a turbo

Re: Re: I need to know??

1.8Hlx 16v R Reg 1997
it has done 62000miles and i have done all of that except the first 14000 ish
I know I will need to do some engine work so it will take the extra strain it will be under for ither the turbo or the super charger

Re: Re: Re: I need to know??

I think 230bhp would be a bit over the top from a 1.8 unless you are planning a new crank, new con rods, new pistons, new valves etc... :)

Maybe 150-160bhp.

The big expence is plumbing the manifold(s) and the electrics (ECU, sensors etc..).

As the engine was never designed for forced induction the manifold pressure sensor cannot cope with positive pressure.

If you've got the cash then go for it.

Re: Re: Re: Re: I need to know??

so would you say that the super charger root is going to cost a fortune or would that costing aply to the turboing of my car as i know i can get a low presure turbo system put on
i dont mind not being at such a high bhp i would really like to give me car a good kick up the ass to get it moving before it hit the magic 3000 rev mark and lets face it turbos make a real good sound with a dump valve mind u they sound good without lol

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: I need to know??

There is alot that needs doing for both. A decent roots type or screw type supercharger will give you a better kick up the ass than a turbo but you will still need all the plumbing, drive pulley on the engine, remapped ECU, probably bigger injectors, new MAP sensor...

Both options are costly.

I'd say not much change from 3k for the supercharger. At least with the turbo option they have done it before and know what to do.

i think novitec do a conversion kit to add a turbo to the 1.8 mk 1 bravo. check their website. you will find a link on the bravo forum

Supercharger

I know the sebring do a supercharger for the mx5 (my girlfriend wanted one for her mx5) which give around a 40% increase - so it will only put it up to the power of an HGT.

Your better off buying an HGT with what it will cost for a supercharger, if you have aircon anyway you will likely have trouble getting a supercharger to fit.
i know it is £2000 for the sebring mx5 kit, but thats without modifying any engine components.

Re: Supercharger

the MX5 is a very strong engine and the supercharger is a bolt on job. You then either need a new knock sensor or a box to go in the crank sensor cable. A friend had one and it was FAST!!

It helped that the MX5 ECU was designed to cope with positive manifold pressures.

Re: Re: Supercharger

Dosn't novitech make a turbo conversion for the 1.8 that give 165 bhp???? i think so.
