General How to wash engine

My engine has become very oily (front side). I think upper and lower camshaft gaskets are leaking. How must it be washed ? Hot water ?

Do not put water or a power washer near it. Use an oil repellent like WD40. For the painted bits, use an all purpose car cleaner like "Sun of a gun" to clean the surfaces.

ive got a better idea. buy a can of brake cleaner.

Gunk, use a old toothbrush to scrub it into the oil.

Oh and replace the camcover gaskets!

By doing that the camshaft must be taken off. It requres much of a work and I don't have the knowlede nor equipment, to set the timing belt. If I go to mechanics, they will rip me off + there is no garantee it will not leak again. Mechanic one replaced the upper cam gasket and guess what happened.. in 5 days it was leaking on the same place. It's cheaper to fill up the oil from time to time I think

take it back if it only lasted that long. although they may blame something else. i find that my engine will leak oil when reved hard (which is what it likes :devil: ) so i find just topping up the oil from time to time is fine. found the best thing to use was just choke & carb cleaner, basically just a strong solvent. also removed alot of the black ash. almost as though there was a fire under the bonnet but everything else seems fine which is tad odd. as long as it runs fine i wouldn't worry too much unless you have enough to have it sorted entirely. which in most cases isn't worth it, unfortunately.

Does it? Removing the camcover on the 2.0 16v only requires the breather tube to be removed.

Yes, the upper cam gasket is easy to replace, but unfortunately the lower one is also leaking. Recently I had timing belt changed. I asked mechanic if he could replace both cam gaskets. He started saying "that will require much work.." and when I saw where this was going, I just said to him "Leave it". I wish to have clean engine, but like Besbie said, it is not worth it. It's funny, my car isn't worth (maybe much less) 800 EUR and yeat it still looks like new and its design and color (red) makes it look better (specialy of the front), then some later FIAT models.

You can get it pretty clean just scrubbing gunk into the oil and rinsing with water. I had to do this to identify the leak from the camcover gasket on my Tipo.

That is head gasket ? I though the head gasket is posistioned lower, under the spark plugs. But I guess you're right. Is possible for head gasket, to leak oil ? Any other side effects on engines performance ?

No, on SOHC, there is the top cam cover gasket, then the head to cambox gasket[cam box is removable], then block to head gasket [headgasket]
You can by from places like Frost, a tube of leak repair called oyltite that you place along the gasket to seal it. No need to undo anything, it actually mixes with oil to seal the gasket. Also, you can put stuff into the oil through the filler cap.

Be careful washing an engine with water, it may not work after doing so, and yes I learnt the hardway. It wasn't that expensive in the end more of a pain to work out the problem and fix. As expected it was electrical. If you do use water do it from a watering can not a hosepipe. Atleast you can control it that bit better with a watering can.

The key if using cleaning products is to agitate it, i use washing up brushes, the ones you buy for 25p at tescos, much easier than a toothbrush although is worth using one of them for the small areas.
