General How to protect shattered window

You appear to have invented the first Fiat 500 Van in Aus !!
Cabrio van i think!
Yep, first and only van you load through the roof! 🙃

Needs a pair of truck mirrors, like my '74 Bongo;

Just to return to this briefly; after a two month wait the new window finally arrived and was fitted yesterday;

Tomorrow I have to take it to have the new glass tinted to match the rest, then it's job done!🙃

As a side note; reading the part description it appears the window, rubber and chrome strip are all one 'part'. With the likely cost of that I'm relieved it was an insurance job!

interesting...have you had the other windows tinted or where they factory?

I had to replace all the windows on a salvage fiat and after a bit of investigation, it appears that there is two different codes on the glass thats used in 500s.... No one could and in one particular glass companies case would tell me what the codes meant or whether it was a different tint.

With all the "incidents" you have had you must be a bit worried about "the next time" are you allowed guns in OZ ?!
Not an option I'm afraid; since Port Arthur Australia's gun laws are among the most restrictive in the world - I should even have a permit for the ancient packet of air rifle pellets I found in the shed! Fortunately most guns in Oz are in the hands of professionals; armed forces, police, bikie gangs.... 🙃

I think as long as the Biker gangs and the professionals have got them, then there is no need for the general public to have guns.

Aus Like the UK exercised common sense when it came to gun ownership.

I suspect the difference in part number on the 500 is due to the trim along the edge of the glass rather than any change in the glass itself Chrome as in the pictures above or non chrome on cheaper/older models.

What have to ask however is the video above is like a year old, are you saying you still don't have an answer to this after a year?

I had the car tinted shortly after buying it, with the door windows as dark as is legal and the rear ones as dark as the installer had to hand.. With the UV levels here it was important to protect the upholstery, not to mention the occupant! It's possible Oz-bound cars have a higher level of tint but in every other respect they're basically identical to UK cars so I doubt it. So far as I can see the only window choices were Lounge, with chrome strip, and Pop without.

The etched markings in the bottom corner are identical to the old glass on the off-side except for the last number at the bottom; ".2" on the old and "3..." on the new.

As it was claimed through insurance I wasn't involved in ordering the part for my car and all the glass people had to go on was the VIN so I have no ideas to offer on that score. I was concerned that the part that showed up might be wrong in some way, what with the long supply chain and months of waiting. Just as well the prat who broke it didn't target the back window!

Bikies here tend to shoot each other at least... I have a friend in the US who felt it necessary to buy their daughter a gun on her 18th birthday. I don't know which frightens me more; the fact of teenagers with concealed firearms or the perception that society is so dangerous as to warrant it...🙃

The convertible has different codes because the antenna is integrated in the rear quarter window.
(It's on the passenger side of my LHD car)

Not on my 2013 500C - the AM/FM radio antenna is embedded in the windscreen so that would certainly have a different part number from the hatch's front glass. I may be mistaken but I think the DAB antenna may be in the rear glass on later cars, maybe AM/FM too (if they even have AM any more!). 🙃

to both of the above, yes ours is in the front windscreen too (on the 500c). however i was talking about door windows and rear quarters just on the 500 - I never looked at the code on the windscreen, but i needed to make sure that the colours/tints on the glass were the same....I still have no idea what the difference between the two codes is.

A quick 30 second search tells me that this is the tint code so the part number is something separate.

This number appears on both the left and right quarter lights with (as shown below) and without the aerial so has nothing to do with being any specific part number for the window

i believe the 8 with the dots (from memory) is year and month of manufacture.

what i couldn't find out - despite mailing pilkington and ringing i think, was the difference between c241 and c728 - i suspect that is a tint code

No the 8 is the tint code that comes from a fiat 500 specialist on eBay, easy to track down just search eBay for fiat 500 rear quarter glass, you could even message them to see what they say, there are multiple levels of tint not just two

Tint code 0 and tint code 8 the C241 remains the same

I concur. Here's my full set;
GLASS.jpg

My car was built 10/2012 and all these, bar one (lower left - the new glass), have a '2' or '12' in the last number leading me to believe it is a date code. My car does not have the DAB antenna of course.🙃
