Here are a very detailed instructions and pics of the Abarth standard intake, under tray and how to disamble it, as this shows how to remove MAF you can follow it for MAF cleaning. (MAF dirt is responsable for a lot of fails)

Cant quite make out from here what the filter is made of ;) but if it is sponge then dont bother as sponge filters are the crappy-est of the crappy the Grs induction kit will soon be out for the Abarth/Shoowee and you will get a damn site more BHP from that than the typhoid tea one :)

The K&N are cotton made I believe.
 
The cons of this kind os induction is that in order to breath cold air the filter is located very low and therefore in severe weather conditions (water pools) the car is unusable as water can go inside engine!
Pro is that with the open filter in the colder denser air stream and with the straighter and polished pipeline it brings more power.
