Btw, those figures were from memory - I've probably left a few bills out

The Punto beforehand was costing about the same to run due to the wonder that is Arnold Clark. I'll bet the service department were probably wetting themselves with anticipation when a Stilo Abarth owner went through those doors *shakes head in disgust*

As I said though, when RGZ goes to her next owner and I swap her for something that may be able to out drag a milk float, I won't mind paying for servicing and the like. It's the rotten deal in finance that's been the true killer for me these past years.

Basically, the mk2 1.2 8v Punto was £3995 on the forecourt and I was paying £99 a month for that from February 2004 on a 5 year deal. The engine went pop in March 2006 requiring (according to Arnie) £800 to sort it. So then I got the Stilo at £4995. The combined of what was owed on the Punto, the Stilo and the engine work that was needed on the Punto PLUS the interest of finance came to around £12k. In other words, in total I'll probably pay something like £14k or more overall for the Punto and Stilo just for the forecourt prices with the added interest of finance.

The Stilo's currently worth £2k if I get the best price for it - I'm currently paying £2400 a year in finance for it and will be doing that till March 2011. As I said, if you can avoid finance then make sure you do.

Man why did you got for a stilo and buy from a dealer ? I probably would of just went for a cheap run around for a few quid!

I shudder to think what I've spent on the silver beastie in the 5 years I've had it, would probably make me wonder about my sanity :nutter:

However, if I had to guess I'd reckon on over £2k on 'tweaks' - but the car owes me nothing, it's running 100% (at the moment!) so by the time it's had a partial respray, Schumi bumper and new headlight fitted plus one or two tweaks I've got up my sleeve it'll be a whole lot more.
It's addictive I tell you ;)

Abyss - If I remember right your Bravo is the 120bhp 1.9 16 valve version (in the short run of Stilos that had it) remaps have given around 170 bhp and in excess of 300lb/ft torque. Which is nice

The 8v 1.9 in the Alfa of Gregry254 is the same as mine so tweakable to around a maximum of 170 bhp also, depending on who does the map and how far you want to push it. More often around the 150 bhp mark and, though I hate to say it, a modern diesel is more than a match for a standard HGT in a straight line. The 156 is a fine chassis too, so may very well keep up in the windy bits too

The 2.4 multijet 5 cylinder diesel engine (depending on model, some had 210bhp standard) fitted to the short lived Fiat Croma, the Alfa Brera, late model 156 and the 159 is capable of well over 280 bhp without pushing the mapping boundaries into engine blow-up madness......... now that is a scary thought and very much why I wanted a Brera (y)

im not gonna push the remap stupidly high as i want the clutch to last longer than 6 months so near the 150-160 marks more than enough i wud say :)
although if i can pind an uprated clutch well you never know :D

I'm running 155 on a standard clutch and (2 years in and fingers crossed!) no issues at all. I thought it did have a dodgy clutch recently but turned out to be water from my trip through the floods a few weeks back - so 170 ish should be just tickity boo on a standard clutch (y)

Hmmmmmmmmmm feel the power :slayer:

I've only spent about £50 on my car so far but then I've only had this one for just over 2 months now! After Christmas is over (which I know for a fact will see me with a new induction kit....) Im going to be investing in a new set of alloys (really like those black jap wolfrace ones) and a set of sideskirts as the punto looks stupidly bare on the sides with the sporting front and back bumper.
Also thinking about lowering it by 30mm but via a full kit, not just springs, so I guess the first half of the new year is going to see me spending about just under a grand. :(

280 bhp from a diesel, that's something I wouldn't mind having under my bonnet!

Although for a 19 year old 150bhp and tons of torque is more than enough :D
Combined with the sexy looks of the alfa of course

At the time it was the best option to go on finance with monthly payments I felt. I mean, it was £100 deposit and £99 a month with the Punto and given my job, which hasn't had much of a pay increase - it worked out decent.

I was just plain naive, pure and simple really. Of course I should've just saved for a few months, bought a banger and done it up but I wasn't thinking like that at the time. I may well know a decent amount about cars, but the mechanical side was still a bit of a black art with me at the time, so wanted the relative security that a 1 year warranty and the like would give. Of course, the dealer patter did end up persuading me as well

It was worse with the Stilo as well as I was almost bullied into it. I didn't really want the car, but with the Punto broken and the salesman saying he'd cancel the engine work debt and keep the £99 monthly payments for the first year with the Stilo while the dealer paid the other £100 for that year, I decided I may as well trade up as the Stilo WAS/IS a better car. When I went back the next day to sign on the dotted line AFTER they'd taken my deposit, they said they weren't going to pay for the engine work and that I'd "withheld" that from them. As if I would've done that  So basically, I was at the desk, with the sales boss sat across from me saying they would've never agreed to those terms and they actually had 2 "heavies" behind him with the salesman cowering in the background. It was properly threatening and I felt I had to sign as they said I wouldn't get my deposit back on the Stilo. And so that was that :(

Of course, why did I go back for servicing and MOTs. Well, I didn't know of anywhere else that would service the Stilo in Paisley so I kept going back and same with MOTs. Though after that £633 MOT I left them and went to Hi Q and got charged less than a tenth of that. Servicing was still reasonable until they did that couple of hundred pound one. It was only by chance I found that specialist in East Kilbride and now I'll never use anyone else.

I'll admit that I should've and could've went elsewhere. Arnold Clark treated me horribly and I felt like I was held over a barrel every time they had my car. It's my own fault that they conned me out of so much money, I'll admit that as well.

Sorry to ramble on, but as you can probably imagine it's a bit of a sore subject for me

If you've got a good relationship with your dealer, fair enough. But Fiat/Citroen Arnold Clark (formally Alfa Romeo/Fiat Reg Vardy) in Paisley are one of the worst dealers in the country. If you can, AVOID

seriosuly learn to change oil/all filters and plugs urself it will save so much money in the long run!

Yeah, I pretty much know the basics like that now. Only thing I need is an OBD II reader or similar to reset the service interval (and work out how to do that of course) - only reason I'll probably take it to the garage next time though there is some other stuff I need done.
