It's quite simple though, we have 2 registration runs each year now instead of just the one. So an '02' plate means it was reg'd in March 2002, whereas a '52' plate means it was reg'd in September 2002. i.e. the second registration in any one year adds '50' to the year. Our next 'plate' will be a '55'.
