How many Miles should I get out of a full tank?

I have just got rid of my poxy 1.1 fiesta and I used to get on average 280 miles on a tank.
What will I get with a Bravo 1.6 HLX?

Not a lot!

Most people that post here get crap economy and it has been the cause of many a thread. My HGT does 18.3 mpg on Super Unleaded or Optimax and about 17.5 on normal crap juice. MY 1.4sx does as much as 24mpg, but I can only use normal crap unleaded in it.

It depends on sooo many things so it is difficult to compare. Simple things like do you drive up big hills in the first 3 miles from home to your style of driving ALL effect consumption. I only mentioned the first bit as I had a Jag XJC 5.3 V12 that did 1 (yes one) mpg up hill on choke. It was actually cheaper to move house than drive up the hill every day!

At the end of the day though, if you only do 40 miles per day the actually cost difference per month in doing 23 mpg and 25 mpg is so little it just aint worth worrying about... so I don't!

Cheers

Re: Not a lot!

What Nigel says is true, but at the nicer end of the fuel consumption scale, although no world record, I get about 35mpg at a constant 80mph, well thats what it worked out as when I drove to the South of France and back in the Summer in my 1.6. City driving you'll probably squeeze about 20-25mpg, using steady acceleration and rolling down hills. I too used to have a 1.1 pop fiesta (it was given when I was a student) and in comparison it was very economical

Re: Not a lot!

I too have a 1.6HLX and seem to get around 34-35 mpg as a general rule, but that said, I drive virtually all the way on motorways to work, and work shifts so I never hit traffic queues caused by rush hour.

My record on a run down to London (from Manchester) and back, was to turn in 420 miles before I had to fill up. That was averaging about 80mph all the way.

However I am going to have to fill up on the way home tonight, and I have only done 320 miles to the tank this time. I don't know if I have driven in slower traffic or with it being colder, and more heating being used (especially the air-con) that has drunk all the fuel, but it's the worst performance I've had since buying it in September. :(

Re: Re: Not a lot!

air con robs the fuel tank blind mate. just stick to the normal heating or freeze.

Decent economy.

Gareths figures are the more realistic. I too have a 1.6 and average the same. My record was approx 44mpg on a run from wakefield to heathrow and back (450 miles on £33.00).P.S the car is not driven lightly either.

1.2 economy

i know its not a 1.6 engine, but i have achieved 50mpg from my 80 sx on a full tank... not bad is it !

Half empty?

I find that I can do about more miles on the top half of the tank than the bottom. Think my fuel gauge might be playing up...........
Was deadly impressed the first time i took it out though - seemed to run forever on a single tank..

How long did that trip from Wakey to Heathrow take you?

Re: Half empty?

Its not your guage playing up mate. Its how they made the car, its supposed to do that.

Milage

I have a JTD 105SX - I can get over 600 miles out of a tank if I drive mainly on motorways. I think your tank holds 60 litres plus around 7 litres reserve which should give you more miles than your Ford.

HGT Mileage

This will make you laugh...

my average for every 180 - 200miles is £35, almost without fail (on Shell Optimax - 73p/litre)

horrendous eh???

Re: HGT Mileage

Do you drive you car at full throttle all the time?? I normally get 350 miles on 55 litres, mainly motorways at 80-90. when in town i drive quite quick, have only had 250 miles to a tank when driving at 120 for long periods.

mine is a 98 model mk1 with 51000 miles on the clock and a supersprint exhaust, cat back. i found the exhaust improved the mpg a little too as it breathes better.

HGT

I am a reasonably fast driver, but I have found that the induction kit has also taken 20miles off a full tank.

mind you when I drive on a motorway, I would never get 350 miles out of a full tank - at least I think not, as I never go much past the fuel light.
Probably 300 at a push.......

btw - mine's a '98 HGT with 40k on the clock

280 miles from 55 litres in my HGT

But my missus has a lead foot.

Still Visiting

Yes eevn though the bRavo has gone I cannot resist this site, my 1.8 HLX with all the mods i made was getting around 340 370 miles per tank and there was still over a gallon in the tank. So it does pay to make mods sometimes to all you die hards who think that Fiat actually made the car operating at its best, sorry guys you obviously do not have a clue about marketing.

Oh for 280mpg!

I am lucky to get between petrol stations! The fuel light comes on before I hit 200 miles and I need to get to a garage fast. I check my mpg all the time as I have to keep the receipts with the milage on them and I generally get between 16 and 19 mpg.

280 from 55 litres sounds about the 23 - 24 mpg mark which is pretty good. God knows what mine would be like if I spent much time driving in towns.

F**K!

Sounds to me like you drive seriously hard or have a prob mate. I used to drive my dads S-Type Jag (auto) and fairly hard, that produced 22 - 24.

Havent bothered to work out what i get from my HGT but i guess around 28mpg

HGT

I tend to agree with Nigel. My light comes on before or around 200, and guessing that the remainder will carry me a further 30miles, then you get the idea. And no, I'm not a massively fast driver either.....

what's going on?

About my thirsty HGT

hey, i also get 380 km (~240 miles) for the 55 liters (what here costs ~u$s 60).
I always drive in town, and i notice that when we hit the higway for short trips (50-60 km cruising at 120km/h) the consumption figures goes WAY better.

I think it's not a fault of our thirsty 2.0 engines, it's a matter that this is not a city/town-car.

My Bravo has the induction kit from K&N that makes this gorgeous sound, and improves that much the performance (it seems to have no impact on fuel consumption).
I also changed sparks plugs, for brand new jap NGK ones. No change in consumption.

...but the car accelerate QUITE FAST. :)

Regards,
Gonzalo

My MPG....

.... Is probably down to my driving. My Alfa 156 V6 did only 16 mpg on average. I have a friend has sussed out why when we went to Southampton the other day, apparently in the whole 200 mile round trip I never changed "up" until the rev counter hit the red line once and every time I came up behind something I automatically changed down a gear.

Critics eh! We did the same journey two days later in his TVR Griffith 500, and returned 20 mpg, two more than me! We did the journey in roughly the same time only he didn't have to use the full power to do it, which I think is the difference.
