I want to learn a bit about cars, at the moment I know nothing about them, only changed a wheel for the first time a few months ago, and even then I was just helping.

What kind of tools would I need to do a basic service? I've got a 2001 Focus 1.8 TDDi.

I've got the Haynes manual somewhere...so will dig that out I think as well!

Thanks.

well just look on the list what they usually do
oil
coolant
filters
dont a haynes have it all in?
or you could do it the easy way

for a focus

haha knew something like that would come along .

I'm sure it is in the manual, however can't remember where I put it lol.

ford coolant is 10 year life

unless the tdci is chain its also due a cambelt shortly (100K or 10 years)

service schedule is in the service guide

basics will be oil filter and pollen filter

if its the same as the petrol 1.8 focus the filter is a PITA to get at at the back of the engine

if kier is a complete beginner, a cambelt may be a bit advanced :p,
youl need a big screwdriver, to hit into your oil filter to unscrew it (after draining all oil of course)
you will need a spark plug socket to undo your sparks, or glow plugs if yours is diesel.
probably different sized spanners and sockets, and maybe screwdrivers, but at moment cant remember any more lol.

my haynes for a ford focus says :
every 6 months:
oil + filter

every year
check aux drive belt
check electricals
check for leaks
lubricate hinges and locks
check wheels are tight

every 20,000 miles
change spark plugs and pollen filter
every 30,000 miles
renew air filter
check manual transmission fluid

every 3 years
renew brake fluid
renew coolent
every 40,000 miles change timing belt
60,000 miles = fuel filter
100,000 miles check valve clearences
