How does you JTD drive?

basically after owning a 16vt coupe for the past 5 or so months due to my mileage increasing during the commute im looking to turn back to the bravo side and more specifically to the ownership of a bravo JTD.....anyways i just test drove a 2000 W reg (quite high mileage on 100k) earlier and the drive was sooo flat and slow, this cant be representative of how a JTD drives, no turbo kick, with a full open throttle the revs built up very slowly, its safe to say i didnt buy it BUT how should it drive? do they give the same turbo kick as the rest of the diesels i have driven or is the JTD a different beast?

Obviously its not going to be no where near the speed of the coupe but to be honest it felt slower than my g/f's cinq!

Im thinking i chose a bad example to test drive but would like some feedback from you JTD' ers!

Thanks

It could be that the particular car you drove was suffering from a faulty Mass Air Flow sensor which when it is working should enliven the acceleration considerably. If the car is as sluggish as you describe it is likely that this needs replacing or cleaning but this is not always successful. Maybe this is a good bargaining point if the rest of the car is fine. Whilst 100k miles is on the higher side for a diesel this is just run in. As regards the Bravo JTD there are two engines the 100bhp in the HLX and 105bhp in the SX. An HLX car has the better spec. It is my experience that the JTD engine in std tune does not deliver a real surge of acceleration that you are after like the older 100TD does. The turbo is smaller for a start. However it is slightly more relaxed and some have said slightly smoother than the TD although it does lose out very slightly in std tune to it's older 100TD brother in acceleration to 60.

However the benefits of the JTD engine are very slightly better fuel economy 50mpg and a tad more depending how you drive of course. It is also in a lower emission tax bracket which is £115 for a year (prebudget figure).

But the benefits of the JTD (the 100bhp engine) really come when it is remapped to potentially 150bhp and some have claimed 170bhp. But bear in mind you will probably need to replace the clutch as this is currently a weak point and there are few if no aftermarket upgrades available. But again depends on how you drive.

You don't say what your budget is or how many miles you would be doing. Bear in mind that at 100k other components apart from the engine which is very robust might need replacing such as suspension or steering items. But again this may depend onhow the car has been driven and maintained throughout it's life.

On the whole they are good value for money and reliable. Mine has been. A late JTD HLX in good condition is pretty hard to find.

Hope this helps,
andy

sounds like the maf sensor had gone, they dont pick up much after 3k when it has, drive like a bag of nails!

Plenty of them in Germany :) I got mine from there.

For Fiat to supply and fit a replacement MAF sensor the cost is about £240.

Go for a car with FFSH history, the red key plus two blues and radio code.

A late HLX 2001 Y or 51 plate has climate control, heated seats and mirrors, nice std alloys, front foglights, 6 cd changer, alarm and immobiliser. Even when remapped (about £300) with fairly lively performance you can still easily get 550-570 miles to a tank of diesel. Obviously this depends onhow you drive. No gain without pain though - in the wallet!

Buzz get a JTD SX in the same colour as your car and swap all the mods over. Who cares if its not a HLX. I have a HLX and the main piece that makes it a HLX is the the Front Bumper with foglights, which i have swapped for another bumper. I mean you wont need the spoiler, alloys etc if you swap bits over. Just get a SX and add your bits to it. That way you make your 1.8 standard and easier to sell, plus you'll get the advantage of owning a JTD that looks good.

In Germany...........that's if you want a left hand drive car and a LHD diesel at that. Get an Integrale instead as at least you then have loads of power to overtake quickly and safely.

dunno why your having trouble finding a JTD buzz... I have 2!!

Well I have 1 and I've just bought my sister 1!! :)

There was a chap on here thinking about selling his JTD HLX... but he thinks its worth well over £3k!

Peter H...... If your anywhere near the middle of the UK.. i'll let you have a drive in my JTD and you can see what they are like...

oh.. and can you take me for a quick spin in ur Coupe... I don't wanna drive.. I'm only just getting use to the JTD power ;)

cheers for the input fellas, looks like its the MAF then, they go for around £123 on shop4parts + VAt so i will take this into consideration, another more slightly worrying fact that i thought may be related was that the car had fsh up to 55k but nothing after that, im assuming the cambelt must have been done but theres no guarantee on the regularity of the oil changes etc..

at the moment im doing around 300 miles a week so the 22 MPG out of the coupe is painful, i agree tho these JTD are like rocking horse ****!

cheers for the offer tommy, im up north (lancashire) so not that close to yourself!

if u do buy it.. no matter the age or milage.. get the cam belt changed.. an extra £100 today is better than £1000 tomorrow!

My sister bought a JTD 2 weeks ago.. wouldn't let her drive it untill it had the belt and tensioner changed!!

Yes im a mean brother.. but I don't want it to go bang!!

Every 4 years or 40-50k get it changed! :)

Without full service.. use that as a bartering tool too.. but its a diesel... they are pritty frugil!

Just for consideration.. myself and Lozz payed £3000 for our JTD's last year!!! His had 45k on the clock, mine 55k!

£1.5k isn't a bad price :)

Tommy, if you see a black JTD on a 51 plate, be it SX or HLX, let me know. in fact, it can be standard for all i care, so any colour. The ones i've seen have been tatty, or had 100k on the clock :S

i dont want to be worrying about suspension, wheel bearings, gearboxes, clutches, driveshafts, brakes, wishbones, wiper motors or any of the other stuff i've had to replace so far in my 45,000 miles of bravo ownership.

iis it too much to ask for a 51 plate JTD HLX with under 50k on the clock, FSH and thats been cared for a lot, for 2k? okay. maybe? but if someone found one like that, i'd do a straight swap methinks

I've had mine for the best part of 7k miles now, about 6 months driving. Apart from needing a service and some attention to the squeeky belts it runs brilliantly.

You should really feel the shove once the turbo kicks in so i'd say the MAF needs some attention. Mine only really goes if the pedal is hard down. The last cm of play on the throttle makes quite a difference in the acceleration.

Much more fun than my old 100 HLX 16v which wheased like an asthmatic hamster when faced with a hill.

i can't really comment on how the JTD drives without the re-map...

My sisters feels ok tho.. like a normaly turbo diesel. there is a get up & go @ 2.5k revs when the turbo wines up & it quickly gets to 70mph.

I've had my car as i say almost a year & done a lot of miles!!! never any trouble & it's made me smile on more than 1000 occasions... esp down the 0-60 strip @ donny south!!! gosh thats scarry!!!

Tommy are you sure that turbo kicks in at 2500 revs ?

Mine turns on at 2000 rpm.
