"It will modify any standard ECU by telling the ECU that the incoming air in the intake system is cold and so advances the ignition by up to 2 degrees with more fuelling to compensate, therefore producing more power. In many cases fuel economy is increased too. Power is increased by up to 15BHP and torque is increased significantly.
It will be more responsive and you WILL LIKE IT."

Another one here: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/FIAT-ECU-CHIP...14&_trkparms=72:1683|66:2|65:12|39:1|240:1318

"How does it work? The mod itself is a small resistor that tells your engine control unit (ECU) that all of the air coming into the engine is cooler (and therefore denser) and packed with oxygen. The ECU then sends this a signal to the fuel injectors which, in turn, creates a more powerful detonation in the combustion chamber."

Oh I see! It makes more powerful explosions in the engine than the car should usually have....

Huh what?

i found a site for homemade modules. the idea was the same as this 1. the guy just bought a resistor and soldiered it to some sensor (map or temperature).

the idea is to cheat the sensor that the engine is still cold (this already happenes in these cold mornings)
my opinion is that it is like driving on 100 octane gas instead of 95 octane gas -> no difference.

borewash comes to mind

Agreed. Putting in more petrol without more air will have that effect of washing the oil off the bores - premature piston ring wear, not to mention a waste of expensive petrol and having petrol-contaminated oil.

In certain (special) conditions (part-throttle hesitation), modern engines probably do run more lean than ideal for power, but that is a tiny loss. I think someone forgot the decimal point when they said "Power gains up to 15BHP".

Basically, beyond checking/maintenance, just don't mess with modern injection systems... end of story

There's no free lunch - the manufacturers would have grabbed that long ago. I find that 'miracle devices' seem to go down best with people that believe in conspiracy theories... you know, the engine that ran on water and was bought out by the oil companies, the carburettor that gave 100mpg but the inventor was shot, etc.

Bulls**t comes to my mind ;)

Those products are just snake oil rubbish. As Alex says, they appeal to the gullible who believe in all the conspiracy theories and that the big bad motor companies really have restricted their engine's true power potential just to spoil their fun.

What price wisdom eh?!!!
