I have absoloutly no idea about amps at all but i just about know enough to no what i want. what im looking for is a amp to power my 6x9's and another 1 to power the sub, how would you wire it up so it works, please make everything as simple as possilbe wen explainin cos i really do not have a clue

amps are simple, run power from the battery(away from speaker cables or youll get interference),,fit an inline fuse and connect to the amp,run an earth from the cars body to the amp and run a signal wire from the head unit to the amp(this is a connection that goes live when you switch the stereo on to tell the amp to come on) connect the speaker cables and your away.this is a very simplified guide although if you buy an amp it will be more obvious and we can help in more detail.list the ice in your car already, head unit,6x9's etc and the ice guys will give more in depth detail as its not really my thing

u would need a 4 channel amp, this means the number of terminals that are available to connect speakers too, so 4 channel means 4 speakers.

2 channels would be taken up by the 6x9's and u would 'bridge', this means use both the remaining terminals as one (gives more power), for the sub.

what is your price range for an amp, then we could have a look around for which one would suit your needs

sorry just hijacking stevo's topic!

just wandering i have an amp but on a cinq how and which way etc do you get the wires to go to the battery? i believe its some wires to the battery, speaker cable, (headunit to 6x9) and earth and live to other places am i right (whats the damage if i wire them wrongly!)

many thanks

+ is red. Thick cable from battery. A fuse needs to be installed as near the battery as possible. Through bulkhead with a rubber coating. Do not put the + cable woth speaker cable as mentioned OR the signal cable from the head unit. Causes interference. Do NOT bolt the amp to the car's body due to grounding. Ground (-) should come through the wire as mentioned. Grounding the full amp will cause a hum or nasy noise through all speakers. You need as mentioned a 4 channel amp, where you bridge 2 channels into mono to deliver full package to the sub. Remember, the more power the amp is the better. To weak amp will destroy all speakers and itself. A powerful amp will eventually destroy speakers, but you will be able to hear the distortion and prevent it from happening firs. Go for RMS watts, not added watts or peak power.

Ask for RMS watt per channel in 4 ohms.

Cheers for you help guys. most helpful, one other quick question, my mate is selling a few amps and a sub, he recons i should use 1 of the amps for the 6x9's and the other for the sub. the two amps will be bridged together. does that sound right? cheers again

Yeh u could use 1 amp for the 6x9s and 1 for the sub.

The amps would both have to be 2-channel, connect the 6x9s up to the amp as it says on the terminals, then 'bridge' the 2 channels on the other amp for the sub i.e. use the negative terminal of one channel and the positive terminal of the other channel.

When he says the 2 amps will be bridged together i think he prob means that you will 'daisy-chain' the amps. This means that u wont hav to run another power cable from the battery for the 2nd amp. You just run a short piece of cable from the amp thats been wired (find the terminal for this) and connect it to the 2nd amps power socket.

Bridging the amps doesn't sound like a good idea. Twice the current is drawn through the first cable causing lack of power and eventually overheating. It should be VERY thick at least. Best with two power cables and two fuses, or one FAT cable splitted in the end to the two amps.

We found in our MGZR that the 6x9's ran well from the head unit alone and added an amp with a 12" sub to add to the nice base/bounce! Going to do the same with the Sei when the stuff arrives...fitted a JVC head unit and 12CD changer today, just need the other bits now.
