I would also recommend:

Norton Anti Virus
XP firewall AND zonealarm
Adaware

Norton: I know it is seen as the "popular and expensive" virus checker but having tried others such as AVG, Norton is in a different league and am even going to update my subscription which is something I wouldn't usually do!

Dont renew the norton anti virus, simply delete it from your hard disk and dont save your settings, then re-install it and you get a years subscription again!

Helz, i don't know many ladies with such a knowledge of IT..!

I am impressed.

About JAVA, MS stopped supporting it properly after IE 5 (I believe?) so to use it for any newer pieces of JAVA such as many online games you must d/l a new JAVA virtual machine. Trying the MS version was a waste of time, in the end the only decent one was the SUN JAVA VM.

I wouldn't look at Opera, not because I think it is bad or anything, just because I like to stick with industry standards because then when people say "how do i...." etc. it's easier to help and I get plenty of those "how do I..." questions!

Regards
Paul

Chris: Firstly it was included on my install when I bought my new computer so I don't believe I have an inidividual copy, although I haven't gone through all the CD's I got it with yet! Most probably just included on the recovery CD.

However, are you sure they don't use a registry entry to prevent you from doing this?

my first impressions are very good, apart from the ad bar[:(!], only way of getting rid of it is if I get the proper version. The ads arent that bad because they are relevent to the site that you are on, at the moment I have got a 'FIAT PARTS/SERVICE SPECIALIST' being displayed.

My only main concern with this is that it does not refresh the screen, i.e, when I post on this thread I will need to hit the 'RELOAD' button in order it to appear, I had troube with this happening on my old computer, the cache was at fault, I will check that before I explore the ins and outs of opera.

I will be back in 5 with my initial impression of MOZILLA, im in the downloading mood now:)

Paul: i bought nortons internet security and had it installed and registered, had to format hard disk beacuse of my (stupid) error when i re-installed it i had a new re-newal date, then Nortons suffered an internal error (unzipping a copy of office 2003, it went mad!) i had to uninstall nortons, didnt save settings re-installed it, and regisitered, same details again and i had another re-newal date. :D

How do you mean won't let you open links? Pop-up links specifically? Or any link to any page? The setting for pop-ups is under file > preferences > windows then the best option is 'requested pop-ups only'. You may also need to activate javascript for links on certain websites, this is also under preferences. Just go through all the prefrences and set them how you like basically :)

If it's requesting the page then it can't get through at all and the request is stuck at your end somehow. It may well be the firewall - seems a likely suspect. If you don't like the cache (and I do as it speeds up page loading times - especially for pics), play around and reduce the cache size for pages to 0 then it won't save anything. Too versatile for its own good. And you don't have to use the buttons - it's actually F5, same as IE (for once).

Just caught up with this thread.

At home, I use Norton Internet Security 2004 [got it for about £14 OEM, including years worth of live updates] on XP Pro, plus Google toolbar and Ad-aware.

I do use Kazaa [tut, tut], which means I do suffer with ads, but only when the Kazaa desktop is running. Apart from that, machine seems to run happily.
