It's time for me to start being nosy again and ask you all pointless questions simply because I can

This week I'm inspired by my nephew and his mates who are just learning to drive and working out how to buy their first car. Some of them are lucky and acquiring cars from aging relatives or getting them as a gift from their parents but the majority of them are like my nephew and using their own money that they have saved/earned over the years.

So how did you fund your first car? Did you buy it yourself or was it a gift from your parents/someone else. For those of us who are a little older how much would your first car cost today?

I paid for my first car from a combination of savings that had been set up for me by my grandparents when I was born (not actually a huge amount but still very welcome) and savings from my various Saturday jobs/birthdays etc. My first proper pay packet paid for the insurance which was actually possible back then. The 7-year old car cost £1300 which is £2363.40 in today's money and just goes to show that Aberdeen didn't always have a dire second-hand car market [attachment=1:28elrs18]cool.gif[/attachment:28elrs18]

So tell me about your first car

first few years i was at college then uni, and a car was both pointless & too expensive on student loan, so i was just insured on parents car. Had very reasonable use of, as my parents work in schools, so when i was off uni, they were off too, so car was sitting unused :)

My first car (2001 Astra) was bought for me by parents after i came out of uni & lived and worked at opposite sides of Aberdeen..
I paid them back over time... Insurance wasn't too bad either, as by that point i was like 19/20 i think, & working full time.

My first car was a burgandy mk2 golf, b207 dgb, 1.3, running 16" OZ superT alloys, goodmans stereo and mountney m34 steering wheel... custom boot build with old hifi speakers cos I couldn't afford proper car ones... it cost me 250 in 1999, about 3 months wages was splurged on it

My first car was a 1974 850cc mini cost me £70 my dad and I totally rebuilt it by the time I was finished it was gloss black gold alloys centre exit exhaust twin carbs and two bucket seats no backseat ps I was 17 at the time I am now 47 maybe one day I will grow up lol

technically, my first car was the Imola blue cinq i had before i was on here. Was bought via a combination of leftover birthday and christmas money, Only cost me £230.

Looking back on it, it was actually a very solid wee car for the money. Ok, the clutch was ****ed, it didn't have a third gear synchro, it overheated because the cooling fan was siezed, it had a few wiring issues and earth problems, it never had a handbrake... but that's all stuff nowadays i'd have fixed easily.

It also was lowered (i think about the same height red was before it went off the road) and had a janspeed dtm backbox.

One of the few cars i've owned that i actually missed and the main reason i got into cento's and i've kept with the cinq i have now and why i'm rebuilding it rather than doing the sensible thing and getting rid, i know i'd regret it like i did getting rid of the Imola.

My first car cost me £1000 V Reg Citroen Saxo East Coast (Limited Edition) 1.1 (1124cc) V584 JXF I think was the registration of it.
My Nan had given my sister & I £3000 in premium bonds each.

I think I was the 5th owner of the car, the insurance was £900 & didn't even have the car for a very long time.
Bought the car Jan 2008 drove it twice before going back to England, couldn't drive it for months after I moved up (long story), got it back on the road about June/ July 2008 had use of it for 2 weeks before some silly moo went into the side of it & wrote it off :(

I think the furthest I drove in it was to Glasgow once & Girvan once.

My first car was a 1990 fiat uno 903 cc with a 4 speed gearbox. An Italia 90 limited edition (it had some stickers on it) cost £40.00 in 2001 was an m.o.t failure. The doors were rotten the wings had rust on them I had to replace a caliper and most of the brake pipes to drag it through an m.o.t. It was more pink then red itwo paint was so faded but I Did not care it was my car and it stopped and started

seicento abarth. 500 quids. saved up for myself and bought off my dad. well, never game him the choice. i insured it and drove it till he gave up and said i could buy it,.

1986 a Datsun 120A F11 from cup price cars when it was at Ratho Station. 200 quid I think it was. Ran that into the ground. I remember the clutch cable snapped at silly oclock on my way home one night. I pulled out the rear speaker wire and used that. It snapped just as I was turning into my street :) Bonus.

Actually my first car was a graduation present, a seicento abarth. I found out that my parents apply for a loan just to purchase this one. How sweet, isn’t it? This is my first love car, way back then. Today, I'm planning to fund my own Bravo 2013. I'm actually excited to drive it!
