Problem fixed.
It's not what I expected. The code and engine management light mislead me. It was simply the starter motor playing up, and I'd guess, about to fail altogether.

Yes, but at times the engine would turn and turn without firing and giving the impression of a good starter motor, so I stayed on the wrong path with the code, thinking the fuelling was wrong. Still learning lol. Give me my old cars to fix any day .

Probably a dead spot on the commutator , the part where the brushes touch to make an elctrical connection on the aramture inside the starter.
In the very old days as an apprentice the end of the starter had a square on it and if you turn it a little as the starter was being activated it would suddenly start to work.
It was in the days before pre engaged starters so flywheel teeth often wore and starters could jam because of it so the square could be turned in the opposite direction to normal and the starter would free off.
I remember things like that as though they were yesterday, but can't always remember what I had for breakfast the day before out of a choice of three options.
