My 500F will not start after standing for a while with a hot engine. The coil heat soakes and will not produce spark until it cools. I guess that it is in an extreme enviroment near exhaust/hot exit air. Any tricks here to keep the coil cooler.
 
Hi, sounds a bit unusual- it might pay to check that it is the correct coil- over the years I have found a few 500's that have been fitted with 6V (ballast) coils without the ballast which can cause overheating problems.
I suggest replacing the coil with a 12V non ballast type and you should be fine. There is a heatshield mounted above the exhaust and around the distributor which may have some effect if it is missing- it is held on with two bolts and runs between the two exhaust pipes.
Usually vapour lock is more of a problem on 500's in the Australian climate- when hot starting put your foot to the floor on the accelerator and crank the engine until it starts.

Good point. The heat shield is in place. The coil is after market painted blue. Could be resisted without the resistor. I have noticed that when idling the engine misses from time to time giving a back fire through the carby. I guess that the coil may be shorting and fireing late from time to time.

Worth checking both the coil and condensor- condensors are closer to the heat and action than the coil and often can be faulty from new...
The backfiring at idle is more likely a carburation issue- they tend to run lean as the carburettor spindle wears and often crack the insulator plate between the carburettor and cylinder head. If you remove the carb also check that the carburettor base isn't warped- will often help if you file it flat before re fitting.

The carby to manifold mounting plate has a tube which on mine is drawing air. What is the idea of this tube.

I believe it is to drain away any fuel that leaks from the carby onto the pan on the mounting plate. Prior to fitting these, fuel could drip onto the high tension leads or spark plugs and potentially start a fire.

The coil was new but the - terminal had been over tightened. It was half sheared off allowing oil to escape. The coil was not producing spark after heat soaking after sitting for a time after a run. New coil fitted.
Carby base gasket was too large allowing air to be drawn in through the bolt hole. New gasket fitted. Running nicely now.
