HI,

Ive had my 1.6 stilo active for about two months now. Havent had any problems not even any warning lights...... Start first time when cold but

When the engines hot and i try and start it, It can turn over numerous times and wont start.

but if i try it again, e.g turn key back and then try and start again it will jump into life. Its like when its hot theres no spark or fuel. It was partically bad two weeks ago when it was really hot.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Stu

If it feels like no fuel or spark then it most likely is just that ie your engine isn't being allowed to start until it's got some extra information.

Try this,
Next time you turn the engine off when it's hot, without removing the key, restart it again. Starts first time now doesn't it. :)

So you're engine is being "immobilised" when you insert the key afresh and not allowed fuel or ignition until it's totally happy with the key immobiliser and the feedback from various engine sensors

Check for any stored fault codes if you can because mine will do the same if there's a fault code in there. Make a note of the fault code if you have one, clear it if it's a boring one as this will also reset your ecu and just go for a 10min normal type drive so it relearns everything again. You may find your car starting first time more often afterwards

I had something similar with my old car which turned out to be the fuel pump relay. When it got hot, it didn't like closing so the fuel pump wouldn't prime and the car wouldn't start. Started first time every time when cold though...

Probably not related but something to put in the back of your mind (y)

Yes there's eng temp sensor all right but again, if it's playing up then the car will hardly start at all when engine is warm. This one starts perfectly second attempt.

So it just needs the "ok" from all engine sensors and immobliser and it's off. It's only getting the info it needs after an attempt at engine start has happened

Now with some engine fault codes stored (like MAP sensor for instance) the ecu will sit there waiting to see if it's ever going to get a response from that engine sensor or make a decision to ignore that sensor for the drive and run on best settings it can, which is does a cracking job of good running but not very economically.

Crank shaft sensors fail in this way on a lot of cars. They go intermittent and it will/ will not start at random times. I don't know if Stilo's are known for this though.

Thanks for the all the responces, Ive tried as per above and the engine started fine.

Im going to go for a drive later and when its hot im going to try waiting 10 seconds before starting the car. Give it chance to sort eveything out. May just have a slow ecu :S

Will update late :)

Ok that kind of confirms it then. Do you have any way you check for any stored fault codes?

No but im thinking of getting a reader.

Theres some on Ebay. U480??

Would you recommend this??

Thanks

Haven't used one of those but a few Stilo people have with success so do a search and see if it gives the info you want.

Talktomycar.co.uk are very knowledgable and helpful as equipment improves all the time. Good comms and quick delivery too

I have used with success the U480 code reader on my 1.9 jtd 53 plate multiwagon , it is just what the cover states a code reader nothing fancy ,reads the codes and delete if needs be, I got it as a budget reader after a fello stilo owner from the forum pointed me in the right direction, I did get a full code list with it but think it will still take some further info to get to the cause, still a step in the right direction if you have the code though.
