IT's this month's edition of Seraph's "What Could it Be"... yet again trauma has been brought about me by my lovely car.

I have previously mentioned that on start-up the car warns that oil pressure is low...after 30 seconds this warning goes away but this horrible noise appears from around the fan-belt area - it's a raspy electronic noise.

What could this be?

Further to this, when I'm trying to throttle her, the power keeps going away, occasionally this results in an engine fault on inject circuits 1, 3 & 4. at such times, the average MPG changes to --.-

What could this be?

Basically, she's been into a FIAT specialist, who've said i'm probably best to get rid, as they've not seen the oil problem before, and it was therefore, not worth looking at the other problem....these things may not be cost effective to repair.

Any (cheap) help you guys can think of would be more than appreciated.

Many Thanks

I'd do a voltage drop test and recheck your main battery earth. Have a look in the Stilo Guides
Changing the oil filter can get rid of the low oil pressure warning as can redoing the oil pressure sender connector

I'd guess electric related issues. Low oil pressure on startup is a symptom of low battery voltage / current. A little throttle usually helps, as this kicks the alternator's ass which then charges more, and all the sensors get the voltage they need to communicate the results to the ECU. If this doesn't help at all, I'd try a full (slow overnight) charge of the battery. If the problem resurrects after a short while, the alternator might be the culprit.

what about the noise it's making?? what could that be, it's really bloody loud!

also, by the power keeps going I mean it's pull, not electricity power... just re-read what I was saying...

as in, when you're pedalling on a push bike and the chain slips... you don't go forward but your legs keep on going round,...
it's like the revs keep on going (or my foots still down) and the car isn't going anywhere, it makes it kind of kangaroo!

Bloody hell, it's the clutch then. Only in 4th or 5th?

no, 2nd & 3rd as well... not so much in 2nd, but plenty in 3rd, not as much n 4th either.
I thought it was the clutch but it doesn't feel like the clutch is going.

You like the multiple faults don't you Seraph:)

A clutch slipping will gives that wayward feeling of revs going up with no go on the car but it wouldn't cause injector faults and av mpg figure changes. Something odd there and not related

The 1.6 clutch starts slipping with very little provocation and when it does it'll keep on slipping until it really cools down again. If it's fine when it cools down then maybe there's nothing much wrong with it apart from being weak with very little grip. What mileage do you have on it? Mine went up to 73k before i got fed with it and changed it but it was easy to provoke slipping when it was at 35 k miles

I don't understand the kangaroo part. A slipping clutch won't make the car kangaroo, in fact it'll be as smooth silk so can you enlarge on what you mean? What gear, speed, what are you doing at the time?

ok, multiple faults is what a FIAT's all about isn't it??

To explain the driving issue, when I'm pulling out onto a dual carriageway if I use second, i'll drop the accelerator to get up some real speed, but she'll be really juddery almost like the engine power is on and off... on-off-on-off but really quickly. Some times this is only slight, others it's really heavy, and some times it'll throw up the fault on circuits 1,3&4

It happens in third, fourth and fifth going at any speed, but the only thing that's the same is that i'm trying to accelerate quickly.

I don't really know how else to explain the symptoms... all i know is it means my damn car wont accelerate quickly and often wont go any faster than 80 (not that I go faster than 80 on the road, but on the track I might need to)

Have you invested in a new coil?

Swap it around on all 4 cylinders, checking for any change after each swap over.

all 4 coils were replaced a short time ago. Is it possible that the spark plugs being incorrectly gapped could do that?

Coils do tend to start failing under load but for it to happen on 3 cylinders at the same time and then it's ok again when throttled off doesn't sound so much like coils, more like plugs

So have you put new plugs in?
Any recent history we should know about?
Any recent work?
What are the fault codes that are coming up?
Is your av mpg zeroing at these times?

More importantly what's this bleeding noise you're mentioning? If it's that loud can't you narrow down where it's coming from? Sounds like it needs urgent attention
Can you upload a sound vid onto Utube?
Engineers stethoscope is good for sourcing sounds but watch dangling parts like hair, hats, scarves near the belts

Ha! Yes plugs incorrect gap would definitely cause that

the average mpg zeros whenever it "loses power" so the so when the power is off, it zeros.

The coils got replaced in March or something (When I had all that previous trouble)... I replaced the plugs in May or something, but I may have gapped them incorrectly.

Other than that for recent work, it's had timing belt replaced...front o2 sensor changed....not a lot else.

Some people put multi point plugs in but i thought they were worse. By standard I mean the recommended ones [FONT=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]BKR5EZ

They're only £2.50 each from here

I find best gap is 0.9mm and not the 0.8 they're shipped at. Makes a huge difference

I think Fiat recommend 0.9mm for them in the 1.6 too
