I have problems with my horn it works when it wants to we have changed the clockspring if I am right it is a gold colour metal circle it still didn’t work or is it something we are not able to do. We have the Haynes book to be honest not really much use they don’t give much information at times. If anyone who knows what it is and could I have a photo of the part that will need replacing in the steering column. and checked and cleaned the connection to the horn.

Thanks,
Julie.

Hi Adrian, I forgot to mention that we did clean the wire connecting to the horn! I should have mentioned in my post.

Thank you

Hi, sounds like a knackered horn to me, Halfrauds do them for around £13 choice of high or low note, if you,ve got another car borrow it & connect to your wiring. As for the clock spring behind the steering wheel this is for the operation of the airbag system & is linked to the airbag warning light.

Well my original horn failed, it started making horrible sounds when pressed, as if the horn was shorting out. At first I thought it was a bad earth, but after doing all the tests below i found out that the horn had failed internally. Sometimes worked and sometimes sounded awful.

Therefore i suggest you....

Firstly test the horn. (use two cables one to positive on battery, the other to negative and touch the horns terminals).

If you have life in the horn proceed to next step.

Check the steering wheel makes contact. I.e. Remove airbag and with a multimeter check to see if when you press the metal frame in the airbag fully down it makes a contact.

If thats fine, proceed to next step.

In the drivers fuse box area you will not see the relays but if you put your hands around the rear of the fuses you'll find some relays. One of them a small one, will be the relay for the horn. Try and replace that and see if that works.

Finally if all else fails, replace horn with new one. I have a compact Naultilus twin tone air horn on my car now and it sounds awesome.

I did check the horn the horn sounds perfect and tested it on a battery just to make sure so not sure what next

Why is everyone going for the difficult options right from the start? I notice it quite a lot on the forum.

The first thing you should always do if your horn stops working is to put a meter or a test light across the horn terminals to see if power is getting there consistantly.

Do the easy things first guys.

I run a motorists centre and often see people going the hard way, like asking for a tracking check because the car is pulling to one side and we find they are driving around with a half inflated tyre on one side.

By the way, unless you really know what you are doing you should not be removing airbags, there are explosives in there!

Hi bpetersb,
We know about removing the air bag this is mentioned in the Haynes manual, but only you disconnect the battery first leave it 10 minutes then remove the airbag, when it’s done reconnect the battery and test by switching on the ignition from outside the car!

The first thing we done was check the fuse, then cleaned the terminal to the horn, it didn’t work and replaced the horn and it still works when it wants. The next thing as mentioned by JoskeJTD is to check the relay! So we have done the easy jobs first!

Relay and steering wheel. When you remove the airbag, make sure the metal frame inside the steering wheel makes a good contact when pressed. Use a multimeter for best results. :)
