HLX ABS

Hi,

hoping someone can help me out here. I've a 96 Bravo HLX which I believe came as standard with ABS. Thing is I've never been able to get the ABS to kick in. Tried it in the snow a while back and the wheels just locked...
So, a few questions
-How sensitive is the ABS on the bravo?
-Any means of testing the ABS other than slamming the brakes on? Not too keen on this in case the ABS ain't working and I flat spot a good set of tires...
-What would be the first thing to check?

thanks in advance

Let me guess you thought that ABS works like normal in Snow and wont lock your wheels?

Open your bonnet look in the far right of the engine compartment next to the strut. If you have a box there with metal pipes coming off it. then thats your ABS System.

All 1.8 HLX's come with ABS, try testing the cars ABS on a dry road NOT snow or ice.

Re: Re: HLX ABS

To be honest I've no idea whether it would work on snow - I assume not judging from your response. Is this because all 4 wheels lock at the same time and the sensors think it's stationary?

Re: Re: Re: HLX ABS

with 2 wheels on snow or slippery mud my abs kicks in very easily just by tappin gthe brakes

braking

I have lowish tread left on my tires

if i break quite hard in snow or in rain i can get the "judder" come ffrom the brakes which is the ABS.

i thought it would come in on snow regardless, didn't think all 4 wheels would go at the same time

Re: braking

ABS will cut out at low speeds and as you said, locking all 4 at once will stop it working.

Get 2 wheels on grass and 2 on tarmac and see.

Re: Re: braking

In my experience you should be able to get ABS to work on any surface at any time in any weather condition - it's just hardest on dry tarmac!

I assume that Fiat ABS is the same as most other cars and you therefore feel a 'judder' through the brake pedal when it's active.

Some of the ideas of how to find out whether you have it seem quite irresponsible and dangerous if you DON'T have it. I think the best idea is to look for the box under the bonnet...

Re: Re: Re: braking

Just a thought - turn on the ignition:-

If a little warning light saying "ABS" comes on for a few seconds then goes out, you have ABS and it is working.
If a little warning light comes on and stays on, you have ABS and it's not working.
If no warning light comes on, you don't have ABS!

Failing that, most quick-fit places do "free" brake checks - get them to look at it (you can always walk away once you know what's what - they may hate you, but big deal!) Don't pi$$ about when it comes to brakes!
