Hi,

I own a Fiat Stilo 1.6 2004 which has done 139000 miles.

I was thinking about doing an oil and filter change soon. Is high mileage oil really worth it and does anybody have any recommendations? I'm hoping high mileage oil may make the engine sound a bit smoother.

Regards, Lee.

Not quite sure what you mean by 'high mileage' oil. Personally I wouldn't leave any oil in longer than 12,000 miles or one year, whichever occurs first.

If you use the 'search this forum' facility, you'll find numerous threads full of (varying) views on the fors and againsts of different oil brands and viscosities. My advice would be to use a good quality, fully synthetic.

Autodata lists 10w40 Fully Synthetic for the 1.6's you may decide to go for a 5w40 or 15w40 depending on which one you can find on special offer. you may also consider going for a 'diesel engine' oil which have higher anti-sheer properties and more 'detergents' and usually better anti-friction compounds than 'petrol engine' oil, so that it keeps your internals in better condition for longer and is less prone to 'de-grading'

Fiat in 2001-2002 recommends Selenia 20k - this means 10W40. Really after 2003 for 182 engine Fiat recommends 5W30 oils. I prefer Comma X-tech or Castrol Magnatec. Why 5W30 - when engine is dry (no leaks) it is much better for hydraulic lifters/followers then 5W40.

Thanks for all the replies so far. There are so many to choose from. My main question was because my car has done 139000 miles the engine is a bit noisy and not the most refined. Would it benefit from a thicker or thinner oil. Dependant on what website you look on they recommend a 10/40 or 5/30 for my car as standard. Lee.
