Just thought I'd say a quick hello. Just dipped my toe into the works of fiat for the first time and bought a stilo.

I'm bound to have loads of stupid questions, so I look forward probs picking your brains soon ;)

Welcome,

I have had my Stilo a few years now and I must inform you that you will be needing to consult the technical forums on a regular basis.

Good Luck

Dom

thanks for the welcome folks.

i've got as few issues that looking around... seem to be quite common to the stilo... and others that are general w&t issues.

firstly - i have a break cylinder thats sticking on and wearing the pads out quickly on the back... not a biggie.

Ciggie lighter doesnt work and plastic has snapped around the insertion point... so all needs replacing.

Drivers seat is worn and wire on the side skirt can be felt on lng journeys (no biggie), passanger side recliner lever has snapped... so eithier the handle or entire seat needs replacing (??).

i have a snapped drivers side door handle (seems common), airbag failure warning (again seems common) and a juddering which feels like a wheel spin at slow speeds (only on pull away... quite worried about that).

Firstly though.... before brakes..... before airbag.... before engine.... i thought id start with the important stuff..... stereo :D

the CD changer is knackered.... seems quite common with the IDC unit.

I have a few options open to me at the moment

1) - buy a new cd changer. - Not going to happen... they seem to be coming in at a high price and i dont want to spend in the region of £200+

2) buy a CD changer emulator (MP3 Unit) and find a way to get it on the CD hanger liner without leaving a gaping hole (possibly buy a blanking unit and cut a space) - they are retailing at about £50 on ebay.

3) Buy a fascia unit and alternative head unit. Possibly the prefered option... but im worried about loosing steering wheel controls. Id also quite like to have the option to add a cd changer into the IDC slot at a later date. The current Visteon unit is a tape deck so id like the option to listen to a cd!!

Can anyone point me in the right direction to a guide on fitting an after market stero and getting it to work with the steering wheel controls.... and ontop of that fitting an aftermarket cd changer (or getting one to work with an mp3 unit).

I suppose i could always buy a visteon cd head unit and fit an mp3 unit at a later date.... but on eebay they seem pretty expensive too.

As if you hadnt already guessed... im trying to get the best of all worlds - but on a tight budget!

Any advice?

i personally dont like th elook of aftermarket stereos in stilos. think they look stupid.

ebay the cdc and there about £50 id get one of them tbh OR go for the emulator as its more veritile.

you could also nip to a scrap yard and get a cd version for cheap??.

just a quick one.... I've managed to find an interface that allows the use of a Sony CD changer. Its a link between the MFAS001 and a sony. Its being advertised as an interface that allows the use of a non standard cd changer...

...will this work with a stilo headunit?

Also - do i HAVE to buy another BP CDC unit or can i get a third party one. I know i cant just go and buy a sony one from the shops etc because of some weird and wonderful way the signal gets processed by the headunit (??) but is there an alternative out there??

I cant find a replacement CDC on ebay for anywhere near £50.

Side note.....

Took my standard IDCA09 apart last night in a last ditch attempt to get it working. After a bit of playing ive managed to free up the mechanism to the cd reader so it now raises up and down (to the point where as i plugged in the unit it moved to the bottom position to reset itself).

What im struggling with is the fact that it doesnt do anything when a cd is in place at all.... no matter what i do it simply wont pull the cd into the correct position and do anything with it (or eject it for that matter).

It does however know that theres a cd in each position.... because i can change the error message displayed from CDC1 PAUSE to CDC2 PAUSE etc depending on the position of the cd in the stack. Apart from that it doesnt seem to do anything at all.

Ive tried indexing a cd by hand into the reader and it wont even spin that.... its as if the reader doesnt know theres a cd present... and it certainly wont raise to correct position and pull a cd into the reader mech'.

Any ideas on common faults i can try and have a go at before i take the plunge and buy an alternative unit??

cheers

Lee.
