Hi im new here so hello

Ive been visiting here since my mum gave me here fiat cinq, im only 17 so i dont know too much about 'my' car!

What the problem is...

the car wont start, me and my dad charged the battery up for a day, we put it in and the dash panel light up and the radio works fine but it wont start, the only time it does start is when my dad jumps it, when my mum had it it started ok, but had the occasional time when you had to leave it about an hour go back to it then it would start but now it just wont start at all!! its really annyoing me!

unfortunately the car doesnt have a manual dont know what happend to it but when we got it it wasnt there, i sent away for a haynes cinq manual so untill i get that i cant look at the problem my self

i think maybe it is an immobilizer problem, i dont know if it was originally installed by fiat or by a 3rd party of a DIY job or what, its just really cofusing! oh and i just read some other topics and it seems someone else had posted a similar topic! and i read the thing about the keys but it only has 1 blue no red!

Its a 1.1 Cinq sporting 98 model!

Please Help anything will be really appreciated!!

Has it been sat around for a while- eg: a month or more? Because if it has- your battery could be shot.

I had a similar prob on mine about 6 months ago, but my battery was so low, the central locking wouldnt even work!:)

Get a multimeter ( voltage tester) if you have one- or a 12v bulb and connect it across the two terminals on the battery. THe black one on the meter connects to the back post of the battery and the red one connects to the front.

If the battery is healthy- the bulb should shine very brightly, if it isnt, the bulb will be dim. A healthy battery should read about 12.6 - 12v on a meter, but as I found when mine got screwed- it can read as low as 6v.

Thats the best I can think of at the mo', oh yes and Hi by the way!!:D

Sory, does the starter turn- does it make any noise when you turn the key?

No way of knowing for sure you will have to get it checked out by a pro I had the same prob a while ago, it would conk out and i would get it jumped and it was fine but then would go dead again i tried changing the battery but it still happened. Ended up it was the alternator and that wasnt charging the battery.

If its your battery it will cost you very little 20-30 quid if its the alternator will cost more 30 quid if you can find a reconditioned one but i doubt it more likely 100 for a new one and then the cost to fit it.

Hope you get it sorted

thanks guys for your help,

my dad says that its a brand new starter thats in it(he says it cost £170)

we checked out the battery and thats fine we charged it up and that and we got a multimeter and tested it out with that and i was fine.

When i turn the key it just clicks it doesnt try to start or anything, and that all it does, when its jumped it fires ok though.

when my mum had it it done the same, we left it for half and hour and then i started it was kinda weird[?]

Thanks for all the help you've given!

could be:

Duff starter
Stuck starter soloniod?
DUff battery?

take the starter off and power it straight from a battery to see if you have a duff one.

If you dad can jump start it and it starts every time doing this it can't be an immobiliser problem as the immobiliser is designed to cut out the fuel or spark supply or a both.
It could also be a dodgy earthing lead from the battery or earthing the engine to the car, or even a dodgy wire going to the back of the starter.

CentoEvo, just had and idea aboyt junmping.. isnt that just bridging a healthy battery across a shagged one? And then starting both the shagged battery's car? If so, if the car STARTS then the Starter Motor cannot be affected- as it still turns. Sounds much like a battery or earthing problem to me.

It sounds almost identical to the problems Ive had when my battery has been discharged...

Jump starting the car forces the engine to turn over as you have it in gear, providing you got fuel it should go.
This bypasses the starter motor.
If it jumps starts all the time and runs fine after this then it suggests the starter/batterys shagged.

Is that not Push starting it? I'm confused!?[xx(]. I thought jumper cables were for starting off a healthy battery?
