HGT vs. VTEC

Hi Guys,

Got a question for all HGT owners.

My non-modified 98'Mk1 HGT (50k km. on the clock) beats a Honda 1.6 HB VTEC(aka VTi) on 1.& 2. shift, it accelerates like hell(its a bloody HGT on 17's with 205/45 Kumho Ecsta rubber) but when I change to the upper 3rd gear the VTEC passes me with the roaring sound of the 7.000rpm.

A close friend of mine & his buddies got 5 different VTECs, the course is always the same...

The first 150-200 meters is mine with a gap of 2 VTEC sizes but when I change to the bloody 3rd gear it ends.. :(

We couldn't finish a long distance run but I feel that I can beat them on a 1.000/1.500m course.

Any opinions ?

PS: Also recognized that my clutch, brake & gas pedal is harder than the other HGT's(driven a friends one & got shocked). My left foot aches when I shift too much.. Also feel that my right foot is going to touch the wheel when I decide to have a emergency brake. Even the gas pedal feels like a stone... What can be done to make them softer as they used to be..?

Opinions on both are highly welcomed...

Cheers :)

Yeah...damn those bloody v-tec's :( (Oh yeah...i have one..lol :))

The V-tec engine has 3 lobes on the camshaft for every valve...under normal driving it acts like a normal car...then as you hit higher rev's (around 5000rpm) it engages a larger lobe on the camshaft...then around 6200rpm it engages a larger cam...producing serious top end power. By keeping valves open for longer, it allows more fuel into the cylinder making higher top end power...

VTEC's Rule

One my second now, used to have the 1.6 now the 1.8, increadable fun, noise to die for with a K&N.

When the japcrap overtakes you do you know if he is in 3rd or still in 2nd?

I assume you are chaging gear at peak power (just under 6k).

a VTI will beat an HGT off the lights by half a car plus every time.
I have owned an HGT for 5 years now and all my mates drive the Honda VTECs from the Civic VTi, Prelude 2.2, to the Integra and Civic Type R.
Dont bother with the Prelude upwards. With the Civic, you will not pull away until you hit 70 to 80mph, and even then it is very gradual
The only way you can beat a Honda 1.6 VTi is take it on at 50mph, you will skin it.

Too true...got a 2.2 vtec prelude...from memory its just under 200bhp :), its years old but eats Saxo's & Nova's for breakfast...mind you what doesnt ;)

I luv da lookz on them geezerz faces wif der phat alloyz az i burn dem up wif a grandadeez 'lude :)

1, 2. HGT is on but.. 3rd VTEC roars... :(

Hi Tom;

I am shifting around 5.500 - 6.000 rpm & I always take the first place from the start but as I said before, after changing to my 3rd the VTEC catches & passes with that unbelievable sound ! They are eating me on their 3rd gear...

As I am trying to run & shifting up to the 3rd gear on 5.500-6.000rpm I can even hear the VTEC shifting up to the 3rd & that bloody tune on my back...
Unfortunately in 1.5-2secs. later VTEC roars on its 3rd gear about 7.000rpm(as my friends say) it passes me easily & creates a gap of 2-3 cars :(

I'll try a long course but I'm not sure that I can catch them.

The funny thing is because of the low torque that the VTEC produces I can manage to take the first place on every start!

But as I told before after my 3rd gear, the time seems to stop only for me :( It definitely looks like a scene from the movie "Matrix" !
They'r passing powerfully !

Bored of this cycle.. What the hell can we do ???

Cheers...

VTi lack of power.

As I read in my Big Colour Book of Fast Cars that mummy gave me for Christmas last year - Integra Type R (1.8cc) = 179BHP.

HGT (2.0cc) = 154BHP

I'm a knob every time.

1.8cc and 2.0cc ??? Fool

Re: VTi power.

I think you'll find that the engine capacitires are nearer 1800cc and 2000cc respectively.

WRONG AGAIN.

Re: VTi power.

See I find this extremely wierd as a few months back as I approached some lights leading to the motorway late one night, a civic vti pulled up next to me and started revving the hell off his engine. as do every time i just sit there in silence until the lights change. when they changed he was to busy revving and missed it so i got away better, now up until 65ish he was all over my ass and probably would have killed me had i let him past but then after that he didnt stand a chance and mine is only a 1.8 why is this.

Re: VTi power.

And the torque figures? ;)

From what I've seen the ITR is only about 130lbft @ 7000ish.

This is actaully less than the HGT155 (139 @ 3750).

The ITR and all VTEC engines only have the illusion of 'high' power cos they rev highly. Its the same with bike engines, 160BHP from 1000cc but it revs to 12000. If it only revved to 6000 it would only make 80BHP :)

Re: VTi power.

Hondas are fast, there is no avoiding that, but that is way they cost so much more to insure!

And @ Danny....i think he probably gave up mate, no offence but i have a 1.8 too and often get in little 'spats' with my mate in his old j-reg CRX...he kills me evry time!

Dont waste you time argueing this one a hond will kill us all (once there rpm is up)! but they have the to put up with a grandad image and cheap plastic interiors!!!

Re: VTi power.

Yamaha YZF-R1, 180BHP with a 1000cc engine. Makes the ITR look a bit **** really.

Re: VTi power.

Just going by your figures above Tom...

HGT = 154bhp / 6000rpm * 9000rpm = 231bhp?

231bhp / 2000cc * 1800cc = 207bhp?

Not sure if you can actually work out the figures that way, but I would still take a Bravo over a Honda.

Re: VTi power.

How does it make the HGT look shitter?

If you could get the HGT to rev upto 9000rpm you would have 231bhp and i've seen a 1.2 rev well over 7500rpm.

Re: VTi power.

You forgot to mention that the Yamaha is Japanese too.

Also, I note that you neglected to metion the bike is five over 5 times lighter than the Integra.

NOW, do your sums again and give me the ratios, please.

On second thoughts, dont bother - has teh realisation sunk in yet.

You will note that the new Gixer is also in excess of 180bhp - so your point is that bikes have huge BHP outputs? Fiar point, I have an old square 4 RG Gamma that will EASILy outrun 750 'Blades. Big deal.

My Integra easily outruns Bravo HGT's.
