I have an X reg Fiat Brava, its only got a small engine and i love the car. I recently tried to fit a new stereo and blew a fuse which stopped the central locking from working...i also couldnt get any power from the stereo so guess it was the fuse. I had the stereo fitted at the w/end and the fuse changed, everything worked fine.....until i tried to start the car this morning, it wouldnt start....the ignition lights came on etc but the car wouldnt start up. I started it no problem with a bump start but obviously i dont wana be doing that every morning - does anyone have any suggestions????

Flat battery? did you leave anything on overnight? if the stereo live attached to the ignition or isit perm live?

Its definately not a flat battery or a complete flat battery anyway, cos the ignition lights come on although it seems obvious something is taking charge from the battery - the stereo is connected so it goes off with the ignition (which also means it doesnt stay tuned which is a pain but the least of my worries).

Well, it does but after its been started....this morning it would start as usual so i bump started it, drove a couple of miles switch off then started no problem..it seems it only fails to start when its been left for longer than a couple of hours, i have this horrible feeling that im gonna go 2 the car park after work and it wont start!!!

it did nothing, there was no spluttering no nothing it was all just dead

Does sound like a flat battery especially if you been meesing wiht the stereo for a long period. (the ignition lights will still come on it just wont have enough juice left to turn over)
I'd put it on charge tonight and leave till morning

Make sure that the stereo is not on when the ign is turned off. If it is then you need to switch the red and yellow wires round from behind the stereo so that it turns off.

The problem is battery related but you need to find out what is draining it when you leave the car.

If the only thing you have been messing with is the stereo then I would have a good guess it is the stereo.

Also, have you wired any amps or subs up to the new stereo?? If yes then then this could cause the same problem.

as stu said... beat me too it

does the radio turn on wen the keys aren't in.

Does the facia come off and do u remove it??

have u put any amps in??

once u have the answers we can help you out :)

Tommy K - Have you got the Bottle!!

No amps, the facia comes away and i remove it...the stereo goes off when the keys are removed (or rather when the ignition is switched off!!) The red light which flashes on the stereo goes off which indicates no power going through the stereo.
I did have to bump start it again when i finished work so I charged the battery last night and put it back in this morning it started fine! I have now disconnected the battery whilst at work but obviously i cant do that all the time!!!

Chances are then that the battery is just run down.

Once a battery get to a certain age and a certain usage then they don't hold their charge for as long as they did when they were new. Eventually they will even loose power gradually like what your symtoms are.

Its either that or the alternator is going lazy. This means the alternator is not charging the battery like it used to.

Best thing to do would be to go to a motor factors and ask them to do a alternator and battery test on the car. This will only take them 2 minutes and should be free.

Also short journys wont help so a good charge may do the trick!
