TD100 Engine sudden noise

Guest
yesterday i noticed that my normally quiet and purring TD had suddenly started banging like an old diesel in a biscuit tin.

it seems to be on the right hand side of the engine if your stood at the front of the car and i think lower down.

noise stops when above 1500 rpm and seems to drive ok.

plently of oil and coolant and doesnt get hot at all. (new rad recently)

seems to be arround where all the pumps and belts seem to be.

can anyone help?? urgent!

sorry for being dumb, i'm an electrical man and do all my own work mechanicly but leave engines alone. when it comes to diesel engines im a bit clueless.

a knock sensor is??

If its in the region of the belts, it will be the driving pulley, the one that is the lovest on the aux belt. Its rubberised and the rubber goes away after 100 000 km, so the pulley starts to make a noise like metal slaming on metal

its like a ticking that the engine would normally make but amplified.

its always been a quiet engine.

my gf lives in wales 125 miles away who i visit every weekend. so basically ive covered about 7.5k in 4 months.

do you think it's important i get it checked out, due to be heading up there tomorrow :S

i have also recently fitted a new clutch slave cylinder so the battery was off for a while, im guessing this might have reset the ecu?!? was all over the other side of the engine.

if so, whats the procedure for restting an ecu and i'll do it now.

"doesnt get hot at all"

Hopefully it gets to the right temperature.

There is no knock sensor on a diesel, also a failed knock sensor does not make a knocking noise.

Does the noise go away if you press the clutch?

lol. yeah it runs normal temp, i ment it dont overheat.

tried the clutch, does same pressed or depressed. its deff an engine noise, like noisy tappets or something just louder.

could a pump have thrown a blade or something??

havent a clue, might try and get a video tomoz and see if any of you can put a finger on it.

Not sure if the TD100 engine has the rubber damped crank pulley (the JTD does), but if the noise sounds like a clangey type rattling that goes away when you give it a few revs, it could well be the pulley. see if you can let off the aux belt and then try and turn the pulley by hand. if it moves by a small angle then its the pulley. about 100 quid from fiat..

Owen.
