Right, im trying to help a amte out, he has a problem with his computer, when it starts up it says 'ntldr is missing' can this be fixed without having to format the computer, as he cant find his copy of xp.

any advice welcome

I saw this many times following putting a pre-built drive in a PC. XP doesn't like to see too many hardware changes without having to re-regiister the software. If it just appeared make sure the IDE cable is attached properly. Google will give you hundreds of generic faults.

yup, both got one

Good. :) Lets see if this does the job then. :)

Grab a floppy, and pop it into your floppy drive.

Download this on your computer http://tinyempire.com/notes/files/fixntldr.exe (Don't blame me if you get a virus, always be safe. :) )

Run it. (I should hope you know how to do this by now. :p )

Click ok to overwriting everything on the floppy. (You'll see some prompts about this, read them.)

The folder should be called Windows if it's XP, so I don't need to go over this... (It might ask about this, if running XP, you'll be fine and continue.)

Take the floppy out of your drive and put it in the computer that is throwing up the error.

(Before you do this make sure the computer is set to check the floppy drive for anything to boot, if you don't know how to do this ask. (y) )

Boot the "broken" computer.

Once you get past the Bios loading the computer should check for a floppy and then you will get a black screen with white text.

Leave it 30 seconds and it will do the "1ST TRY THIS" automatically. :)

Lets see how you get on with that. :p

you get this if the boot priority in the bios has changed or a sata/ ide cable is not properly connected and or power cable.

i got missing ntldr when fitting a new HDD and bios selcted that as the bootable drive so i just had to tell it otherwise.
