Trying to learn how to use this but i am having difficulty. Basically i wanted to remote desktop to my pc in my house whilst at my mates or brothers house when needed. my home pc is connected to the net via a wirless router plugged into and adsl modem router (non wireless). both my mates pc and my brothers pc are just behind modem routers.

Anyone able to help??

even just to show me how it works once would be good.

I think you need some one at the PC to accept the remote call.
Its just there as a help function.

You do not require the ip address as the remote call is done through messenger if I recall so you are already connected.

Sorry about that  you are right I will have a read up on the remote access function.

Not sure if I am reading this right but if none of the computers are networked surely you only need the ip address and the remote access activated on the machine.

apparently if a machine is behind the a router, the router has a WAN (wide area network) ip address which links with the isp. the router then assigns LAN ip addresses to all machines connected to it. 2 there are 2 to contend with !!!

That is only a problem if there is more then one machine attached to the router, if there is you have to access the router and dedicate a port number to the computer you want to access.

Having multiple PCs connected to a router is easy!

I have a static WAN IP address, then fixed mapping to my desktop and laptop via my router, using MAC addresses - so my desktop is always 192.168.1.xxx say, and my laptop is always 192.168.1.xxy - useful for port forwarding, and such like.

OK Firstly the PC you want to remote desktop has to be running XP Pro. The PC you want to connect from can be any windows OS but XP has the connection software built in, rest you'll need to go to microsoft.com > downloads > remote desktop software.

The PC you want to remote desktop:

1) Go to Control Panel > System > Remote Tab
2) Tick the remote desktop option, the main admin/ user account should be added to allowed users, you can edit this but you need to set a password!
3) You need to find the external IP. Go to http://www.whatismyip.com/ and write down the address.
4) Go to Control Panel > Network Connections > Double Click Local Connection > Click Support Tab
5) Write down the IP Address (should be 192.168.0.X) and the Default Gateway address (should be something like 192.168.0.1)
6) With IE/ Firefox open http://<insert default gateway> e.g. http://192.168.0.1
7) If it asks for a user and password, could try admin for both, or I hope you know the password!
8) Go to port forwarding and open 3389 for that IP you wrote down earlier, NOT the default gateway IP!
9) Go to another machine outside the internal network, open remote desktop, connect to that external IP and hopefully it should work :D
