Just a general check of the car after I got it and noticed my oil breather pipe is taped up and oil is escaping from the taped area, would this cause my revs to be all over the place? Many thanks

probably not - But if its failed and badly bodged - get it replaced

8v's is easy - no clips required :)

The 16v is easy - just IIRC needs a new clamp putting on

It could do: if there's an air leak (which there will be, if oil's getting out -- so air can then get in...), the ECU might be compensating by over-fuelling. The pipes are only £5, and not a big job to replace -- although it can be useful to have a selection of jubilee clips to hand to replace FIAT's awful, use-once hose clips... -- although wear gloves: as you'll get very oily...!

Haha thanks ive ordered the pipe and going to give it a go tomorrow, anyone roughly know the size of clips I need?

8v or 16v (presuming it's a 1.2)?

If it's a 16v, I can even supply pictures... -- as mine was in the same state!

I just bought a big box of various sizes of jubilee clips from Screwfix. A few quid -- and they're still coming in useful (e.g. for fixing the garden hose...)! (y)

PS: On the 16v, I replaced the clips on all the large hoses going into the air filter box, as well -- which was, retrospectively, a spark of genius -- as it has meant it's much easier to keep taking the box off, etc., to get to other bits, underneath. (Mind you, the air filter box on a 16v is bigger than the engine...!?!) :D

Haha, yeah its a 1.2 16v, im sure ive got some laying around :)

If in doubt, just measure the existing ones! (Sorry, not finished my first coffee of the morning....)

There's this one, attaching the hose to the cam carrier -- probably half an inch, in old money...

...and then all the clips you can see in this piccy -- although there's actually a clip missing (which I only realized when I saw the photo, afterwards), now fitted, from where the breather pipe goes into the air filter box (there should be two, where, there's one...) -- again, half an inch for the breather, and at least a couple of inches for the large hoses:

Have fun...! (y)

i haven't tried yet but planning flushing the rad, how do you remove those factory fitted jubilee clips do they snap off somehow?

they are a one fit pony

replace with jubilee clips.
Remember to spin the hose in your hand prior to pulling to break the seal between the hose and the rad , ie, twist not pull first.
sidecuts placed on the metal that stands proud on the factory clips twist 360% towards sticky up bit with gloves on to achieve a non bloody easy removal of these clips.

put a little screw driver in an wiggle, refit with a pair of pincers

best of luck:D

Dave i apologise profusely for going off topic but when i read somebody commenting on the use once clips it reminded me that i was going to ask for advice on removing them, i know now that i should have started my own topic.

put a little screw driver in an wiggle, mash um off

edit thought we were still talking about the crank case vent hose clips

no need to apologise, i should be paying more attention

thanks all, replaced this weekend and the car seems to idle slighty better, still a little bit lumpy but nowhere near as bad as it was!

Ordered 2 new wishbones and track rod ends for it and then I can crack on with it :)

Glad you got it sorted! (y)

Spark plugs and leads might also be worth replacing; and (which we should have said before you removed the air filter box...) maybe clean the throttle body? I think there's a guide, somewhere....
