Hi Guys,
I think I am about to do a typically newbie thing I am afraid.
That is ask for advice and then ignore it!
I have been pricing up the various options to me and I still think that DET 3 is the way forward. Principally on cost concerns. I can purchase it for £125.00 plus whatever delivery is. So I should be able to fit to my wiring for not a lot more.
Where as microsquirt is £250.00 from america plus £50.00 for the spark drivers plus what ever I get stung with by customs. I reckon it will be about £400.00 (including wiring etc) in all.
I know that the microecu is pants but I know it should be able to run the 1.4 engine (albeit badly) on its own so with the DET3 in charge it should be possible to get it running ok without too much agro!
This was another issue with micro/megasquirt as people did seem to have a lot of issues getting it running and getting half decent maps. (This is not surprising as its be expected with any kind of homebrew EFI) The main benefit with going with DET3 is that there is an ignition map starting point.
I know that the micro ecu coil drivers can fail but I am still not 100% sure exactly what happens? From what honeymonster says that using surface mount components it makes it more prone to failure. I believe this usually heat related and as most micro ecus seem to be mounted on the inlet manifold where it would be exposed to a reasonable amount of heat you expect it to be more likely to fail.
However my micro ecu is mounted on the inner wing where it will be cooler so I am hoping that this will increase the life of the components!
I could be hopelessly wrong but as I have a micro ecu that could fail at any time already I am already taking the risk, plus for £125.00 I am prepared to take it I think.
Oh well at least you will all get to say I told you so when the micro ecu craps itself.
I know that it seems penny pinching but I want to be as cost effective as possible as then I can upgrade the engine in intervals, supersprint manifold etc.
I just know that there will be so much additional cost in the initial fitting. For example I will need to purchase some sort of induction system as well as the engine.
By the way there is a 1.4 engine on ebay for £200.00 buy it now which I am trying my hardest not to buy as its way too soon!
Thank for your help so far everyone (even if I am not listening!)
