Hi all, looking for some help please. I own a fiat ducato 1.3t 2.0 petrol
Fiat Ducato motorhome (1990 model). It wouldn't start so had to call RAC out. He reckoned it was the ignition module and so replaced that. The problem is he replaced it with the wrong one and it has subsequently burnt out the distributor which has had to be refurbished!!

The problem is the RAC took the old ignition module away and disposed of it and now we need to get hold of the correct one to get it working again. This is proving difficult - does anyone know where to get hold of one. Also if anyone could provide the part number that would be magic. Many thanks in advance for any help or advice you can give. :)

ps. does anyone know what the comeback is if RAC recommend a part that needs replacing, RAC purchase and fit it, the client pays for it but it's the wrong part and ruins something else in the engine.

Hi, i have had exactly the same problem and same vehicle. I called the AA out who said it was the ignition module and i replaced it, this still didnt work, i had the local garage out who couldnt find a fault so towed it to an auto electrician who has said its the distributor. I cant get hold of a replacement one but he says hes found someone that can repair them? How much was it to get yours repaired? We got out ignition module from a place called EK brakes dont know if theres one near you? Cheers

Thanks for the reply. We had the motorhome towed to a garage and they got the distributor refurbished - they quoted about £120 plus a couple of hours labour. They fitted it but still no joy and they are now trying to source the original ignition module that the rac guy mistakenly changed for the wrong one. The motorhome is still at the garage after 3 weeks!!!
I will check out EK Brakes - thanks for that (y)

not an absolute fortune then :worship:, yea mines been at garage since 2nd nov seems an age ago it went in. If you have a problem finding one lmk as ive got 2 now, cheers

Hi Galaxyneo. We had no joy with EK Brakes with regards to the ignition module. Just one thing though... I would check which type of ignition module you have installed. They used to be 6 pin then changed to 7 pin. Our distributor is fixed now but the garage say they need a 6 pin ignition module as this is the only type that will work!:bang:
If you have a spare 6 pin, lets talk business!! ;)

yes it was a 6 pin one, i'll ring my garage tomorrow and check it was ek brakes he got it from if not where was it, i will also check what price it was and double check whether i still need it, altho putting the new one didnt make a jot of difference so im guessing not. I'll be in touch (y)

ok i popped into my garage who advised me firstly to keep hold of the other module i have until mine is running again, just in case its needed. But he did get it from EK brakes at Lancaster 01524 32361. He gave them the reg number and they had them in stock and delivered it the same day, not sure where you are but im sure they would post? LMK how you get on, mine should be running next week so if you dont get one hopefully i will have a spare, good luck

Thanks Galaxyneo. E K Brakes didn't have the part but we managed to locate it from another supplier who sent it to us. It was fitted to the van but ...still doesn't work:cry: They are now looking at the electrics as there are no more parts to to replace!!!

Just out curiosity, do you have the part number of the ignition module you have. It would be interesting to see if it is the same as the one we have just fitted. It's beginning to feel like this thing is never going to get fixed:shrug:

Anyway, thanks for your help and let us know how you get on with yours:)

Oh No! your having the same problem as us now then :bang:
The autoelectrician has told me its the distributor but im struggling to find one, i just hope thats what it is otherwise the garage is out of ideas !!!! it cant be that difficult they are a very easy engine? Been there since 2 nov now im really missing it :(
I'll try and get the model number next time i go in, please lmk how you get on, whats wrong with yours might be same as mine?

If it's the XN1/A engine, it may be the 521007E module.
May be as the one I had (87 model) had the same engine as the peugeot 505, and the picture in the book shows that module. It may have had different modules/distributers fitted throughout it's life though, and the book doesn't list any numbers.

Google 521007E IGNITION MODULE

or

(didn't sell, so he must still have it....)

May not be the one for your van, (I think that's the six pin, but can't remember for sure), but worth looking at variants.

Thanks for the info!! The garage we used have passed the van on to their electrics specialist yesterday as they say that's all it can be now. We also have not had the van since early november and it's just getting rediculous now. Apparently a new distributor is hard to source, hence the refurb instead.

I will let you know the outcome as soon as we hear anything. Fingers crossed!

I think i have found a distributor but havent got my hands on it yet, just to recap you have had your distributor done and the ignition module and still nothing, very worrying. i hope mine is ok when i get distributor, altho im starting to worry already, i dont want to imagine what else could be wrong. Yes please keep me informed, when do you think they will be looking at it?

WooHoo!!! Had a call from the garage today. The campervan is finally fixed. it turns out there was some sort of issue with the electrics, so that coupled with the burnt out distributor was the problem.

Hopefully, Galaxyneo, yours should be fixable as well and you'll be running soon! Please let me know how you get on with yours.

Ps. Thanks for the help (y)

pps. I can't believe it has cost nearly £700 to sort this out !!!!

£700 !!!!!!!! yikes........
Very pleased your back on the road tho, did they say what was wrong with electrics? just in case mine is not going i can act intelligent and say could it be ......... lol
Really pleased for you, happy camping

Hi Galaxyneo. It turns out that they had to also change the ignition barrel as there was a part just behind the barrel that had shorted out. So that coupled with refurbed distributor, new ignition module, labour charges, fees for transporting the van to the auto electrician, added up to about £630.

Any word on yours yet? :)

still struggling to get hold of a dsitributor, but i will, i'll mention the ignition barrel to garage i have to ring them tomorrow, thanks for your help

Hi, just to complete the thread, ive finally got our camper back and running, ours was the distributor - I managed to get one for £20 after alot of searching, the garage was £180 to fit so, £200 to get sorted not too bad? Looking forward to some trips now (y)

I had a problem with no spark on my 1989 2.0 petrol camper after the winter and went down the route of replacing the coil and suspecting all other ignition modules. to make a long story short there is a black connecting block which joins 3 wires as part of this ignition setup, it is moulded and has a wire retaining clip and is only about 10 inches from coil... looks solid but when I disconnected it there was puff of white corrosion dust. I cleaned up the connections, sorted.

I had similar probs as you, when the local agent fed in the Rego # didn't get any sense, it was only when I suggested
1, it was a M/Home
2, it was delivered to the M/H builder, therefore sat in their yard,
3 was then built,
4 was exported to the UK
5was sold and THEN registered in March 2002

That it could be a 2000, or 2001
The local agent couldn't get their head around this, "It,s a 2002 rego! it should be here!"

So I went to Mills Auto Parts, after I explained they were able to track down the right part, (glow plug relay Bosch 0281003005)

Sometimes some people can't see the wood for the trees:confused:
