Technical Help!....Fiat Croma 2 automatic trans gear knob replacement and fitting query...

I have bought a factory original gear knob and gaiter to replace the one that spring mechanism inside knob had shattered.
I can't get the internal lever rod (white plastic) to reconnect with mechanism inside new knob. Can anyone help...does this have to be professionally fitter? Thanks.

To bump this: Sorry I never had an Automatic croma so can't help directly. Have you looked in the eLearn service manual?
Photo of th parts might help.
