'HELP' CAR WONT START 'HELP'

My 98SX 1.6 with 42000 on the clock will not start today. The engine is trying to start but it just wont?? What is the problem!! Any ideas?!

Battery is fine, only 1 month old, all electrics work etc...

Right, the engine is turning over ok I assume?

Is it trying to fire but won't keep going or is it just cranking and cranking with nothing else happening?

Thanks Tom, the car appears to be trying to start but just wont - wots wrong? I only got it last month????

First off check there is no water or oil sitting around the spark plugs, my 1.6 seems to collect oil around a couple of the plugs.

Second, make sure the fuel cutoff is not off. Under passenger seat, black box with rubber top. Press the rubber bit.

Would the fuel cuttoff turn itself off?? I aint touched anything. Working great last night - and this morning nothing??!

If you bang the seat hard enough back it can pop the cutoff... i've done it

No it is just turning and turning, but not starting!! I have so little clues about this!

Tom, for the last 2 weeks, when starting from cold, the car sounds like a rattle snake hissing when you turn it over, you dont hear this when starting from hot?? Is this linked in any way??

Tom, after turning and turning, it started with a lot of spluttering, i pressed the little cut off switch as suggested??!

This doesnet help though, dont think that was the problem, never use the passanger seat.

The noise when starting from cold is the choke cutting in to keep the engine running, nowt to worry about.

Mine did that, would not start until you held the pedal down and cranked for ages, have NO idea why but its only done it once.
