Hi
I wonder if anyone out there can give me a bit of advice regarding a hole in my offside inner wheel arch on a 1997 Fiat Ducato Motorhome.
My Motorhome as been sitting for a while and when I jacked it up to check the condition of the brakes, noticed brakes were seized, pads were fused to the disc, and fell apart when I tried to take them off. Pistons were seized, When I removed the brake pipes to remove the caliper to overhaul, while undoing the nuts on the union between the brake pipes and hoses. I noticed it was making an hole in the inner wing.
Thought I would get away with using my grinder with a wire brush head and remove all the surface rust, treat with Jenolite and then apply a couple of layers of underseal, and jobs a goodun. However once I started attacking the rusty areas in the inner wheel arch, It became clear that it was completely rotten right through and made a large hole.
My vehicle is currently on Sorn and the MOT as lapsed, got an MOT booked for next week. Not sure what to do regarding this hole now, as I have never welded nor do I have any friends who can weld or access to any welding equipment.
But I was wondering is could I cut a patch of steel 16 gauge 1.5mm larger than the hole by say 20/30mm and use steel rivets to fasten it, then apply a few coats of underseal. Would this pass or not? I have attached some pics.
Obviously the calipers are now all cleaned free of rust pistons removed cleaned and put back with new seals and dust boots. Ordered new pads and new disc for front and new shoes for rear. And as brake fluid was filthy black, will flush through some new brake fluid when I bleed all the brakes.
Thanks in advance
Paul
