im a newbie here so hi all. now for my prob, my dash says power steering fault and steering fault light not on .stiff steering so its not working . whats the common faults that you all know of.

:wave: Hi and welcome to the Fiat Forum, sorry that you have a problem with your car but it is difficult to give a precise answer without knowing the exact car details.

However, if it doesn't have electric PAS you can always check to make sure the drive belt isn't loose or broken as well as checking the fluid level.

Post back with the details and we can point you in the right direction.

hi, that was quick. the car is a stillo 2002 with a 1600 16 valve engine. it has the electric moter assisted steering and it has the fault codes. i will read them and post again. thanks for a quick reply

Have a look in the dedicated Stilo section here to see if any of the topics are relevant to your problem and if not ask the question and list the fault codes. I reckon someone will have the answer for you PDQ.

Had a quick search through the forum and Davren has posted a list of codes that might be relevant here.

hi again. read the codes using an autel maxi scan and the following was evident. u1600 u1700 u1702 p0530 p0571. i then cleared the codes started her up and again read the codes. now all the codes are clear, it says no codes found but on the dash it says power steering fault and power steering warning light failure

These two seem the most relevant to your situation.

U1700=NCM-NBC communication (motor-ecu<.>body computer no sign./plausibility)
U1702=NCM-NGE communication (motor-ecu<>el. steering ecu) no sign./plausibility)

Have you had any problems with the battery and/or alternator as I have heard that problems with electric steering can be caused by these items.

i have just bought the car so i dont know the history.the battery checks out ok, ie good voltage. the charging circuit is nearly 14 volts when engine running. but when i run a diagnostic check it says broken connection, could this be an open cicuit somewhere in the can bus connections as these u codes seem to be networking faults. could this be an open cicuit in the twisted pair connections. i dont have a very good circuit diagram to work with so its difficult.

Try looking in here, wiring diagram in post 6. This is getting a little bit away from the "Raison d'être" for theNewbie section so my suggestion is to post in the Stilo section I have linked to above as they are really on the ball and should be able to point you in the right direction.
