Hi All
Joined up as bought a 2014 Fiat 500L 7 seat 1.3 diesel Duralogic
It was for my sister as she has 5 boys under 11
She on a low income, so the £20tax low insurance group and diesel economy, tyre prices ticked all the boxes.
Unfortunately even with a full service history and 67k on the clock we have a check transmission message.
There’s not much out there positive on these faults! What have i done!

Hi, 🙂

It's a complex system,

Several electrical systems involved

Always the chance with any recent purchase that the battery isn't great and sensors are seeing drops in voltage

Do the Rear Brake Lights work ok..?

The switch is often a system sensor..

Best bet is the get the gearbox error code read 😉 BEFORE spending money
Thanks,
History so far, bought the car in Manchester drove it to Scotland 4.5 hours faultless, done an oil and filter, air filter, fuel filter, drove it about for a few days, took it to her dropped it off, she drove 20 miles round trip, ‘Check Transmission’ came on a mile form home.
The car apparently had a new battery fitted just before i bought it. can’t remember the make but didn’t recognise it.
I’m in shetland (of course i am when it goes wrong) so got her to check the transmission actuator fluid, which she thought was low, ordered the recommended hydraulic oil, aprox 250ml was put in, it was up to top so not sure it was actually really low, as capacity according to Haynes is 0.7 litres.
The recommended I believe is 9.555550SA1 it appeared green, but whatever was in it may have been more clear so possibly wrong oil or really old.
The car drove around the block faultlessly up and down gears no problem with the light still on after the top up of hydraulic oil
It was getting dark and my pal thinks he seen the bake lights lighting up the fence when reversing.
I will check when i’m home Monday!
I will check if there’s any codes.
problem is i work away and also in the middle of a full renovation of a place she got she and the kids are living in it so time is not on my side!
I also don’t see any Fiat Specialists around unless anyone knows of one in Scotland!

The fluid is in a clear plastic tub -
"like screenwash"

The fluid in it is NOT brim full..

Apparently you CAN OVERFILL IT

My only direct experience was on a panda, and pretty sure there were high and low symbols/marks

WRONG Fluid.. That's a concern! 🤔

As its got potential to damage seals

Look on Shop4parts site for the correct fluid.. And Specs

You can call them.. They are Italian parts specialists 👍

Getting the error code read would be very informative,

Where is this car based?

Got a few members on here with the MultiECUscan kit to read all the cars modules

I’ve said to leave and not drive until i can see the level, as i seen that it can overflow if too full, its in a very restricted place so not easy to see if there are max and min.
I’m assuming the previous oil may have been wrong as it looked more clear, the stuff i ordered was green.
The car is in Largs, KA30 post code
I’m sure i had a scanner basic that i used on my EOS, I will try and get any codes.
It would be great if someone was near to help with codes!
Hydraulic fluid i got attached.
thanks again!

I couldn’t see any wiring for a pressure sensor or level switch going into the gearbox, does anyone know if there is either?
I know the transmission oil is supposed to be sealed for life, but if there was some sort of malfunction and the actual gearbox oil is low, would the error ‘check transmission’ be triggered?
I don’t want her to drive it if it could be a genuine low fluid warning.
If it’s due to a brake switch or speed sensor that would be different and won’t do damage.
Fingers crossed I can get a code out tomorrow as her in the kids desperate to go out and about!

Member @FiatFleetFamily family is based out that way IIRC

The MES software will communicate with The Whole Car..
And give Fiat speak codes,

Some do VAG /audi style code descriptions.., which can be misleading

Always useful to SEARCH any code here on the forum 😉

It will often lead to a direct fix 👍
