I've had doubts about the heater in the Multi since I bought it. I drive 5 miles to work in heavy(ish) traffic. Lots of waiting at lights then 20-30mph to the next set to wait yet again. Even in the summer when I got to work there would be only one or two "blocks" showing on the temperature gauge. Now the weather's cooled down it stays on one all the way and the heater blows cool/warm air out by the time I get to work. Frost is forecast tomorrow night and I'm not looking forward to it. Due to the clever heater design on my Xm it was blowing warm air at the end of the road and lovely and warm when I got to work.

Is anyone elses Multi like this or should I be fitting a new thermostat? The antifreeze is clean and upto strength. However the water hose from the header bottle is looking frayed at the bottle end and will need changing so I could do the stat at the same time if necessary.

I have a similar problem and after much on-line research of Multipla users with this problem it seems that a replacement thermostat is not worth the cost or bother.

My solution was to go back to the days of radiator covers and I use a couple of bin liners stuffed in the grill. This has worked for the last three years and has been implemented over the weekend to get some heat in the car again.

Add the liners until you get the temperature up to a reasonable level, very easy to install and remove as necessary.

Bump  So I can take it that everyone is happy with their heater and I'm the only one having a problem. Over on the Owners Club cold Multi's seem to be quite common in the winter. It would appear from comments over there that it might be the thermostat at fault, but at anything upto 80 quid for a new one it's not going to be something you change every year. I thought about introducing a new one into the system. I see the Discovery has one in the top hose. Now there's a thought..............:)

Most modern turbo-diesels seem to take a lot longer longer than older engines to get up to temperature. It's not just a Multi thing.

Non-turbo bx's, cx's and even turbo'd xm's warm up much more rapidly than modern vehicles.

hi guys,
touching wood here........................
our 06 multi heater is fine............the temp gauge seems to settle at 2 or 3 bars.............but as said above some new diesiles take a few miles to warm up.....nb; sitting on the drive ticking over will not help this.........they need to be 'working' to warm up quicker.

How can I see the temperature - there is no temperature gauge...?
2000 1.9 JTD Multipla

Does yours not have the digital/LCD display then?
The temp should be on the R/H side of the 'window'.
If it doesn't have the display, it must have a temp guage somewhere.

Nope the older ones without the digi bit have NOTHING! its really poor tbh , ive thought about fitting my own.
Iam used to driving Alfa's with oil temp and pressure gauges along with water temps but the Multi has nothing, it just about tells you how much fuel its got.

Hate cars that only give you an Its too late pull over light.

Ive added a tempgauge And a outside temp gauge on my multi, the two only things i found missing really...
But the heater system sucks badly, the guy that figured out that you shuld mix the defroster air with outside air because "you" want it to be slightly colder around your head than your feet shuld be shoot on sight...
He definitly havnt been using his car when its down to -25 C thats for shure. Tryed to "rebuild" my heater system but it seems that i have to take the heater housing apart and its too cold for that now...

As a last resort my son inlaws multiplas water pump impeller was loose on the shaft and the water was not being pumped to the heater from the engine!!!! good luck

My Multi JTD does warm up to the right number of bars, but does take a while compared to my wife's car (Smart) and my Daughters' cars (Daewoo Matiz, Daihatsu Cuore and FIAT Panda).

But it always has, as did my previous one, so it is just a feature I guess!

It's always the source of complaints in the winter, as I am called Scrooge for minimising the heating in the house (well I do have to pay the bill!), and accused of same thing in the car!:p

Mine being an SX model does not have aircon so its too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter , you cant win :).
