Hello

I enjoyed reading the "how to change your variator" instructions at http://home.hccnet.nl/jaap.bouma/PhaseVariator.htm just now but I was also interested to note the manifold heat shield on that Alfa twin spark engine. The heat shield looks far more robust than the flimsy one fitted to the Barchetta, and yet appears to be a very similar design. Anyone know which engine the sequence shows, or whether that heat shield would fit / could be adapted to the Barchetta lump?

Best wishes

Hugh

I fitted a new heat shield the other day as mine had destroyed itself. I found the lower stud on the exhaust manifold had been snapped off so had to weld another on. Only a 5ive minute job really but it has made a real difference to engine temperatures - especially in traffic.
I did consider heat wrap once upon a time, however after very thorough investigation I found that it could result in heat soak in unwanted areas such as the cylinder head and CAT.

I'm sure you could make a new heat shield. Its fairly simple to use the old one as a template and wrap a former in metal foil. Other way is to buy a tube of epoxy putty, drill the ends of the cracks to stop them spreading, fill the cracks and spray the whole thing with silver heat paint. Job done.

The shield is very light and has no structural purpose so its possible to replace the bottom bolt with a plastic tie wrap around the bottom hose..works fine.
