With a bit of help and advice (see this thread) I now have working hazard warning lights 
. What with the less than stellar drum brakes and a desire to be a bit more visible if I should break down in the dark. I decided that hazards were a must. I has seen some solutions using various kits but they looked a bit too added-on to me. Looking around, I found the Beetle switch which looked suitably period and finally last week got them working.
Parts used:
Wiring diagram as per the attached. Making up the wires and connectors was OK but it was a bit tight to get everything in place from the frunk. The new flasher relay replaced the old one. The piggyback terminal that I tried to get into the back of the instrument light switch was I just too big so I ended up turning the new white wire round, with the original white instrument light wire actually piggybacked onto the Terminal 58b. I tapped into the left and right indicator circuits inside the frunk.
All works as expected, including the big red flashing light when the hazard light switch is pulled, except that the flasher telltale light in the instrument cluster is on dimly all the time; it does, however, flash brightly when the indicators/hazards are on, so I think I can live with it.

- Large washer
