Youngs lads ask about what they have to do to make their car go fast.

Watch this and weep.

Its the usual top gear fun but makes the point about great cars rather than practical cars

BTW - a good Stratos replica costs about double what he said to build.

Take your time, do a good job and nothing will touch it. Insurance is also cheap because they know you'll treat it well.

This one shows exactly what over-large tyres do in the wet. The (slightly) more plain style version would be way better.

Lancia were and are owned by Fiat (as is Ferrari or at least much of it).

The Stratos was a parts bin special - X19 rear lights, Beta suspension bits, Dino engine, etc, etc. There were only about 600 originals - built simply to get by the rally homlogation rules. The Alitalia wide tyred thing Clarkson bought was rubbish and unless it's on slicks on a track, it always will be. The *ordinary* version is well cool totally impractical and probably cheaper to build than a fully pimped Punto with silly split bonnet.

The 3 litre 6 alfa engine in the back looks like a bad move.
I've driver a 155 with the 2 litre and the v6 2.5 (which is similar engine) and even in a 155 the weight of the v6 spoils the handling.
Me thinks would be best with something like the new 1.4 out the mito which is
about as powerful as an old 2 litre and wouldnt weigh much more than a punto engine. Obviously yourd struggle to find one of them. What was the other sugested engine , a 2 litre twin spark ?

yes but it had nothing to do exclusivity with Puntos
being the section you originally posted in

but the engine in alfas is over the front wheels, which is what spoils handling, i've a funny feeling it's not really that heavy compared to the 4 cylinder 16 twinspark units, but due to it's size it's inclined forward which puts the weight further forward than the 4 cylinder units which can lead to a deteriation in handling, as standard.

you can't put an 'economy' engine like the FIRE engines in a Stratos rep! the other engine he mentioned is the fiat/lancia twincam, the engine from most other famous lancias, or in 155 terms, a Q4 engine, also the engine which powers the BTCC 155s.

but an alfa V6 offers the fairly reliable power and the Noise of one of the best engines! also a 3litre, which can then be supercharged or even turbo'd to put out even more power, though you could probably gain more power out of the twincam...

Most front wheel drive cars have the engine ahead of the front wheels. So when the power unit goes into the back you get a mid engined car. The Stratos was on of the first to do it; the Lotus Elise is another example of how its done.

If you are spending £13K, plus engine, plus suspension, plus, plus, plus - and lots of your own time; this car cries out for a great engine. The Alfa V6s are ideal. Dont forget the original had the Ferrari Dino V6.

Its reckoned that a good Startos replica will cost at least £20,000. Compared to a Caterham I think that's cheap and so much more exclusive.

But dont do the full on wide wheel version. The tyres are just too big. Clarkson's car would have been ok on slicks or race wets but on road tyres it will just fly off at every bend. What a shame he'd not managed to find one with *normal* wheels.

BTW, those mega wide door bins are for crash helmets. They really are barking. ;)

You have to be kidding!
The torque from an Alfa V6 is what you want, not a relatively gutless four-pot, which makes the wrong noise and would he left in my dust :)
