Has anyone been brave/stupid enough to DIY fit a proper handsfree kit into their Stilo?

I'm toying with fitting one as the local babylon will be only too eager to write out a £30 ticket come 1st December - any idea what sort of nightmare the under-dash wiring is?

Nightmare...........
You will need a live supply and neutral.
That is permanent and not switched by the ignition if
you want the phone to stay on whilst the key is in the off position.
You will need to see what connection on the radio mutes the audio when a call is recived. Most radio's have this facility. and an input for the phone that enables the audio to be routed through the car speakers.
Possible easy source for the power would be the cigar lighter socket. and route the cable up through the centre tunnel.
I am not sure if this is ignition switched though.
For an aerial for the phone the easiest type to fit are the Car Tax holder type.

The cigar lighter in the Stilo is ignition switched.

I would have thought the best bet would be to look for the kit from somewhere on the high street where the cost is going to be a bit higher but they will often fit it for you for nowt.

But fitting it is half the fun....

Besides which, as an IT Techie it goes against all my morals to get someone else to fit that sort of thing!

But what if you got stuck half way through and the only way forward would be raeding the manual? Wouldn't that be even worse?? :p

Ok so you want fun,

Get the multimeter out.
Or an inductive voltage/current probe. and find a supply feed.
Cannot help with the radio as I don't have a circuit diagram for one. But the pins may be marked on the unit.
You could contact the radio manufacturer direct though.(tech Support)
They are usually helpful.
New car kit about £200.
Fit about £60.

Check to see iff you fit it yourself will affect the
cars warranty.

Even better idea - Just buy my Abarth! It's got a phone in it already. :D

The voice recognition is surprisingly good. Very rarely doesn't understand what you are saying. I use it when I have the SatNav on full screen. It saves having to change menus.

Had fun a few weeks ago though - Had the software upgraded and the dealer ended up setting the voice recognition to Italian. No matter how much I shouted at Doris (the lady in the unit) she would only say "interrupzione".

She's English again now! :)

I've got a better idea.... just don't use a 'phone in the car. Much more relaxing. Plenty of time to indulge in a bit of Motorhead and Black Sabbath (or Limp Bizkit for our younger viewers)
