Well, a year and a half cinq ownership and I have now been blessed with a siezed handbrake cross lever, I have a good handbrake in that it pulls the wheels nice and tight, but I know that it can go the other way and the handbrake effort will see no effort at the wheels.

I noticed the other day while out driving, I felt that little drag just as you come to a stop, and today it was a lot worse, I could even see this in my fuel consumption!! at the end of my trip I had a feel of the rear wheel temp and that confirmed it. Passenger side rear wheel was hot due to the binding.

Back home then and in the back yard, removed wheel, removed drum, and then decided to remove the hub to make access better, the hub fell to pieces with the ball bearings from the rear part of the hub all falling out. Lucky for me then, i had a spare [new] hub to fit.

I sussed out how to remove the shoes

The lever was taken from the car and it was well and truly siezed.

Clamped in a vice then and some diesel added, it soon became loose, then worked some coppaease in, it was now loose as a loose thing and ready to refit.

Getting the shoes back on, leaving the bottom spring attached, as I have read that it can be a pain to fit, I put the shoes over the bottom fixing first, then attached the clip that holds the right hand shoe to the backplate, and then attached the left hand shoe, backplate fixing next, then the top spring.

Overall, easy peasy.

Cable reattached, drum and hub refitted and then a test to see if its ok. No problems.

I thought that as it was such an easy job, I may as well take a look at the drivers side lever.

Wheel and drum off, the lever was nice and easy - last year I changed the hub, and put some spray lube onto the levers joint that siezes up, no problems there so drum and wheel back on.

I am now at one with my rear shoes, and can see that although the handbrake effort is superb, the shoes will need renewing at some point this year.

Well, that was what I did today, glad it was easy, and glad it cost £0 (y)

nice one :) mine where really stiff when i got the car
the cable was new so i guess the person before me thought it was the cable.

I took my lever things apart and machined brass bushes to replace the pins and held with a stainless steel bolt. I also welded up the notch on one side and this helps by giving more leverage... hand brake is smooth now and I can lock the wheels at any speed (perfect for autotesting)
