stuck a Mag tools hand scanner on the stilo at work, just to see if that could pick up my airbag fault, plugged it in and i got the normal airbag fault, then parking sensor fault, loose connection, ABS, ESP, fog lights and headlight faults,

yet once i removed the scanner it was fine,

anyone else had this?

Some scanners can cause a fault to be shown when they access an specific ECU.

A similar thing happens when using modified OBDII interfaces.

Can't remember why but think its something to do with how the interfaces are wired up. Manufactures do it different ways so an interface is not always compatible with all manufactures and false errors are the result.

it detected a fault but wouldn't let me view it, so managed to clear it and just waiting to see if it comes back, car should be on the road again next week and a nice drive to gateshead should help me if any faults are detected

yes.

my cheapo OBDII interface does it when its not hooked up to the USB its a power issue... if i could be arsed to dig through the diagrams and pin layout i would go into more detail.

there's at least 2 pins that have to have a feed (or a ground, i can't remember) without the cable connected to the laptop my dash shows all sorts of wonderful 'phantom' faults. i didnt have an issue with a borrowed MAC scanner but i wasnt trying to access airbag ecu only the engine ecu.

this one was screaming all the faults when I connected it up, but as it was my bosses I ain't goin to be nodding it, I'm just gonna bite the bullet and buy FES and the correct cables

got an elm already so going to buy the patch cables, I posted on the FES sticky but nobody has replied,

cheers richy, already got a vagcom (from when i had a golf) and thats the connectors i was looking at buying,

cheers, but i'm investing in the full FES at some point, money is tight after finding out i've a little'un on the way, but she's wanting a stilo after driving mine, so it would be handy to have the full version for sorting both cars
