The daughter starts her new job after christmas.
The GP will be the first casualty.

It's been an absolute pain in the ar*e, and i'll be glad to see the back of it.

In the last 3 months, we've had the oil leak come back, a rear wheel bearing pack in, and this weekend, it seems the heater fan has gone out of balance, making a right din when you put it on fast speed.

It really has been one problem after another and another and another.

I wasn't a big fan of Fiat's to start with, I remember them being extremely unreliable pieces of crap in my youth.
Nothings changed in 30 years, apart from they look better.

And now that you have had your rant publicly, your car is worth £500 less. Do you think a 5year old vw would be any different?

I think the main problem is that people expect dealers and even private sellers to sell them perfect cars.

Truth is there not. They will sell you car with problems and most of the dealers dont know anything about the cars they are selling.

At the end of the day they are second hand cars.

Its up to you alone to find the good one amongst the lemons.

The second hand car industry seems to thrive on people who dont know about cars.

Prices are increased because if the person who spots the faults doesnt buy it then the person who likes the colour will.

Well said mate

Inevitably there will be problems with any car.
You need to spot all the niggles when purchasing a car prior to even thinking about getting one.
I saw 4 GPs around the UK before I settled on the one I eventually bought.
All service and MOTs certificates matched up and made sense, then I bought the car after seeing it twice, once a stop off to check if it was ok, the 2nd time I went with a Automotive Engineering friend.
Was VERY well looked after.

Unlike some of the others I've seen a GORGEOUS looking sunset orange GP in Hounslow, in the advert, looked amazing. 30k on the clock, great colour, good pictures.
...on closer inspection, engine bay was so dirty and caked in rubbish.
When I drove it, the gears lever was so loose, you need to test these things out prior to looking.

I've said before that a 30 minute test drive with 30 minutes in and around the car which incidentally was faultless on the day, cannot predict what's going to happen down the line.
We've had this car just over a year now, and whilst i keep putting my faith in to every thing i've had to fix, thinking, this will be the end of it, something else always seems to crop up.

Yeah, fair play buddy.
You just were unlucky with a bad one in the bunch :(

Any ideas of next car?

Similar sizes, Audi A2 or I considered the Merc A Class newer model.
Both are so so so reliable!

I am relatively new to this section, so do not know the averages on GPs yet, and got one myself recently, will see how it goes. But, I guess you expect too much. Keeping any car in good shape is a constant vigilance, there is always something wrong with the car (also, there is always something wrong with the plane you are on, believe it or not). There is no such a thing as a problem-free car. At least not a driven one.My wife used to own a Golf mk4 TDI, which was considered very reliable at the time. Have not had a greater relief since I saw it leave. Our new GP already showed a couple of harmless things (like the fan thing, or the rear door handle thing, CD player is crappy too), but these are all nothing compared to the problems we had to deal with the VW.

I have bought two cars in the last few months...a GP 1.2 for my daughter and a Corolla T sport for my wife. I expect to have to spend money to get them to a level where I am happy. Some of the things done will be minor...new wipers, maybe new carpets, etc. I then expect to service the car - oil, filters, spark plugs, maybe brake pads etc. so that I know from that date onwards the car is where it should be. If, before I buy, I see some things that need done I will expect a reduction in price....ie brake discs, new tyres, slipping clutch, bad paintwork etc. If no reduction then walk away time. I also look to get as long a MOT as possible and got the Toyota put through it's next MOT a month early. It's the other unknown stuff that you cannot see that is the problem. That depends on mileage...do I expect a car that's done 30k miles to need a brand new gearbox...no but it DOES happen and it would have happened with the previous owner as well. As said before many, if not all, second hand car dealers (private as well as trade) have no idea what actual state their car is in...they just drive it and get it serviced (well sometimes not). Short of buying a brand new car every time you want to change your car with a cast iron warranty/guarantee it's impossible to protect yourself.....you just have to try and mitigate any problems BEFORE you spend hard earned cash.

She's talking about leasing a brand new A3.
That'll be a weight off my mind at least.

LOL.
About 15 years years ago, I somehow acquired a 10 year old Polo with a misfire, from a mate.
It was as tatty as hell. with about 90k on the clock.

I put a single plug lead on it, (i didn't even buy a full set) and ran it for 12 months doing 15,000 miles in it.
It never so much as skipped a beat, not a thing went wrong.
I put a CD player in it, to dull the boredom of travelling to work.
A year later i sold it to my brother in law for the price of the CD player, who ran it for at least 18 months before hitting a gatepost.

Wasn't my choice.
I'm just the mug who has to keep it going.

VW's are the best!! didn't you know!?

http://www.moneysupermarket.com/c/breakdown-cover/most-reliable-cars/

although it apears here Fiat are more reliable! :bang: DAM!

VW's are over priced and over rated, a mate bought a brand new Polo Tdi and got rid of it after 3 years as it went through a gearbox, clutch and flywheel (replaced under warranty) and did nowhere near the claimed MPG, even adjusting for real world figures.

He replaced it with a DS3 which is better built, far better equiped and much nicer to drive.

Fiats are no worse than most cars and are generally cheaper to fix than many
