could it be the alternator bearings or a belt that is overtight? or needs changing? the belt has the words halfords on it!! im really not a fan of non fiat engine parts!! any ideas guys?

The squealing comes and goes!! any ideas guys?

Damien.

Alternator belt is too loose. Undo the top mounting bolt and the lower a little and tension it up with a lever on the alternator. Don't go nuts, but it's pretty hard for it to be too tight unless you have no mechanical sympathy.

Nothing wrong with fitting a non-fiat fan belt. In fact it will probably be half the price and be just as good quality wise - just make sure there are no visible cracks or wear in it.

Thanks mate, that reassures me a bit. really strange but no more noises today? Not one?? had to pop out in her this morning, with the belt on my mind to be done later in the day.

But not one squeak from her? to be honest the long drive down south when i picked her up on sunday may have slackened the belt a bit. She had hardly been used by the last owner. Will check the belt again in the morning,

Damien.

Its been a dry few days, the sound off less when they are dry. Give them a bit of wet weather or damp conditions and it'll start up again if its the belt.

For what it costs I'd not bother tightening that one, just buy a new one and pop it on, wont take too long and thats another thing less to worry about.

Yeah just ordered a new one from euro parts, im pretty sure its the belt, your right, the dry weather equals more grip on the belt its a nice feeling to be reasured maybe its not the alternator, will wait for the new belt and go from there. By god she squealed all the way home on sunday when i brought her home.

Damien.

Oh yes what power output is the standard panda 4x4 alternator mine is 55.

It is just possible that your symptoms matched mine exactly.
For weeks I had the same problem, I tightened and released the belt, I sprayed it with WD40 and in the end was about to change the alternator when it stopped.
It was a piece of grit in the alternator which got stuck and squealed intermittently.
Not had a squeal since.

Dave

You've given me a flaskback! Saying about grit getting caught in the alternator, I had this caught in my brakes on the South coast cruze! Check it out in case you have a massive rock wedged in there! haha! :D

Thanks for that Dave, this situation has certainly got me absolutely baffled? il be honest i checked the belt tension when i first bought her and it seemed fine, so the fact that i have had not even a squeak or squeal today might seem to suggest the possibility of a bit of grit like you say? Im still not convinced it was anything to do with the alternator? Going to brighton with the mrs tomorrow so will let you know if she makes a noise or not. Fingers crossed.:)
