Hopefully picking up my loverly new sisley next week, was just wondering has anyone had experience with a K&N carb on top filter as opposed to the replacement paper filter in standard airbox.

Does it present cold starting problems?

Cheers Guys.

I used to have one on my 1986 999cc Uno (same engine as yours apart from the camshaft ;) ). Looks good and sounds nice, but no noticeable power increase. The car actually went faster with the standard airbox and filter! It won't have cold starting problems, but when the cold weather starts (like the past 6 months in the UK  ) you will run the risk of carburettor icing during daily running. The car will start and run fine, but the longer you run it, particularly at wide throttle openings, you risk icing the carburettor as there is no warm air feed to the filter as with the original airbox. The car will start to lose power, lose throttle response eventually only running poorly with full throttle opening before stopping altogether. Then you have to sit there for 5 - 10 mins and wait for the heat of the engine to heat and thaw the carburettor before it will run again.

Run it in the summer and you should be fine, but don't risk it in the winter! Pic below of a K&N fitted to my engine:

Thanks Chas

Brilliant bit of info there. Will go for the paper filter i think.

Thanks for the pics mate, looks nice in the engine bay though. Hmm might give it a go this summer.

Won't be any good for 4x4ing or green laneing once you put one on (n) :(

The only time I've ever used one was on a Mini when I was younger, the induction noise was nice but it did loose power and throttle response.

You will draw a lot of warm air from the engine bay that will not give you good combustion.

The best way to go is to get the K&N replacement element. But to be honest I'd just stick to the paper one.

I have a K&N replacment filter, actually it is a Pipercross but they're all pretty much the same.

Be careful about size though, I had to 'change' the shape of the inside of my bonnet - albeit with a hammer - to fit my dome type filter lol

As for starting issues - you will probably require the use of more choke for the first part of the journey before the engine warms up.

Possibly you will need to adjust the idle mixture screw as it made my car run a little too weak and it struggled to support idle without choke, even after heating up.

These problems are minimal though as it does make a beasty sound :)

Thanks Guys,

Some interesting facts there, i had a green filter in my french 1994 1.1 valdisere panda 4x4, yes living in the uk in a colder climate you need that warm up pipe to the carb? could use the nice polished K&N in the summer months though!!:)

Damien.
